Moving furniture is often more for novelty than functionality within interior design, but David Garcia has designed a modern circular bookcase – Archive II – aimed for both storage and transportation. Push it to the next room or sit on it to read books!

It is a nomadic library inspired by ancient travelling libraries from the Far East, which visited courts and cities. At standstill, it creates a room for meeting and inspiration, generating a special acoustic echo for the reader inside the wheel.

It is a crazy and fun idea which surely would bring out the kid inside of us as we run down memory lane with the design reminding us of a fun feature at the local playground from childhood. We wonder how many books it can fit, would it ever tip over on the side, would books fall out, how heavy would it be and realistically, how many people actually would be spoiled with enough space at home to travel around in this bookcase?

We probably only would be able to travel two steps in it before it hits a wall but can see the advantage when having to move house of easy rolling it out. Personally, we would want to see a modified version where the bookcase can be stationed at one spot where you cant still walk around whilst it spins. Picture a rat in a wheel – it could be quite good exercise whilst reading a book.

David Garcia Studio is an experimental architectural platform in Copenhagen which tests new methods and processes at all scales. Collaborating with designers, artists and engineers, the studio works with an “open door” philosophy, where objectives and partnerships are established from project to project.
