Earlier this month, The Raw Gallery in South Melbourne opened up their doors as Melbourne’s first specialist Rock Photography Gallery. The hand picked images in the gallery are fine art of limited edition hand-signed and numbered rock/pop cultural photography of artists, ranging from Jeff Buckley, Nirvana and Radiohead to David Bowie, Rolling Stones, Amy Winehouse and more.

These really demonstrate how a rock photo epitomise an artist by capturing an iconic moment or backstage, or a promotional shot playing an intrinsic part of building a musician into an international icon.

After its opening, I was contacted by owner and photographer Kirsty Umback who is personally sharing some of her images with us of the creative space as well as permission to feature her own shot of Amy Winehouse and Denis O’Regan’s photo of Davie Bowie below. Other photographers at The Raw Gallery include Merri Cyr, Serge Thomann, Stephen Wright and Steve Double.
