Q&A Nathan Price | Co-Designer

Limedrop is a fashion label that captures the imagination and the spirit of possibilities. It began as a love story between its creators and designers, Clea Garric and Nathan Price in their hometown in the tropical Northern Territory. They have since ventured to Melbourne via Brisbane and Sydney. From humble beginnings as a rucksack bursting with designs to now being a label with strong base in the the Australian market and hitting international grounds, Nathan is here to share his ideas, creativity and passion.

Name: Nathan Price

Profession: 1 half of Limedrop and co-designer, Clea Garrick is the other half (and my wife).

Location: Fitzroy in Melbourne, Australia

Passion: Fashion, design, pretty things and bikes (when I feel like getting my grease monkey on)

How I got my break:
We have been very lucky to get some great stores and the people that run them are a joy to work with. We are always looking for the right mix of stockists but we will never forget the people that helped us grow up. Our first collection was Clea’s graduating collection from QUT and it was received very well. After we moved from Brisbane to Melbourne, we had to build a new support network but we are there now and you can expect some interesting things from Limedrop in the near future.

My top tricks of the trade:
Stick to your guns. It’s easy to be lead by trends and negative feedback. If you love what your doing then your work will reflect that.

My style in a sentence: Clean and oversized, retro prep with a hint of 90′s.

Travel destination and tips:
Over the last year, I’ve been mostly travelling within Australia. Our new SS0910 collection includes our travel wish list. It is called “Place I’ve never been” and we designed the tee’s in the collection with a friend of ours, Friedel Meyer-Ebert, to depict kitch tourist tee’s from New York, Paris, Cairo and Madrid.

I bet you didn’t know I can do:
A great job of DIY warehouse electrics. Our studio is a maze of extension cords and power boards.

I get my inspirations from:
People and their interesting projects. I find inspiration in all aspects of design which is both great and frustrating. It’s a bit hard to focus sometimes.

My latest project is about:
Our new Spring/Summer collection which will released next month is called “Place I’ve never been”. It was inspired by my collection of vintage tourist t-shirts from cities that I’ve never visited. It’s a nice mixture of pieces with a kind of preppy/resorty feel, I managed to sneak some Linen and Devore in there. We are also finishing off our new range of jewellery. Lots of new stuff.

My last purchase: A vintage Colnago racer

My current favourite mecho item: The Lego Architectural sets

Pssstt…..One time… I’m really bad with names, especially when I’m out. A close friend of mine has never really forgiven me for forgetting her name for the first month we knew each other.

Hi Nathan… love your designs… where are they available to try on and purchase in Sydney? :) Sam

Your look remind me a bit of Sideshow Bob from the Simpsons but without the knives and killer eyes… you are probably a much more friendly guy! Hahah… ;) Also, I like your idea of Places I’ve Never Been as oppose to the tourist T-shirts people usually buy from places they have been… how long have you been designing for?

    Hi Nathan,

What is yours and Clea’s secret of being able work professionally together as designers and also be life partners, seeing each other every day around the clock? Are you similar or opposite to each other and do you find new ideas from each other or do you need to brainstorm with other people often?

    Kat

Do you wear your own designs only or who else’s creation do you wear? T

    Hi Sam,

Thanks for your kind comments. The best place to find our stuff in Sydney is Our Mish Mash in Bondi, http://www.ourmishmash.com. We’re also stocked in Somedays and Via Alley but that is mainly the jewellery, they have sold out of most of the clothes. Spring Summer will be in stores in early September!

    Thanks Rick,
It’s true, I have a fairly unique style plus the uncanny knack of always taking awkward photos. Plus I’ve traded the knives for dress making scissors and the killer eyes for four eyes ;) The concept for our new collection is something I’ve been building up to for a while and it’s great to see people relating to it. The 4 cities we used as graphics for the collection are our top 4 cities to visit and we aim to travel there soon. Oh and finally Clea and I have been designing together for 4 years.

    Hi Kat,
It’s great working with Clea. Running a fashion label is very time consuming and if we didn’t work together we’d never see each other :) We’ve been going out for 10 years so we know each other fairly well. I guess the secret is getting over fights quickly, everyone has disagreements. We’re quite opposite personally and professionally so we balance each other out I guess.
In terms of getting new idea’s from each other I find that we because we’re together all the time we often end up having the same ideas. We have several great interns and they’re great to chat to and get their views. The concept for our SS0910 collection came together over a month after visiting some friends at their shop wearing a different vintage tourist tee each time. I love collecting odd tourist tees and the idea was born.

    Hi Tina,
I wear a lot of Limedrop but not all the time. We don’t focus much on heavy winter garments due to our sales further north and in south east Asia so I have a healthy collection of vintage jackets. Our pieces are great to highlight an outfit or to mix and match with other designers. In general I mix Limedrop with a bit of vintage opposed to current designers.

Hi Nathan, how do you find the balance designing and running your own business? Does the business side over-take the passion of designing, what do you do to keep the balance and not loose touch? Nice work!

  • 10. Nathan Price  |  August 21st, 2009 at 8:20 pm

    Hi Mikko,
The label runs in cycles. Sometimes I’m heavily involved in the business side, othertimes it’s all about design.I prefer designing more than do paperwork so it’s not too hard to keep in touch. Regularly reading blogs and magazines also helps.

Your clothes looks comfy and nice! What’s your favourite material to work with and is there somehting you wouldn’t wear?

  • 12. Nathan Price  |  August 27th, 2009 at 11:44 am

    Hello Nina,
I mostly commonly work with cotton, it’s versatile and available in abroad range of finishes. At the moment I’m obsessed with Linen and Bamboo, they have an amazing handle.
