The Marcel at Gramercy is a boutique hotel in New York which officially re-opened its doors last year having undergone an extensive structural transformation and stylish facelift. I was keen to have a look at the interior by design duo Goodman Charlton which also revamped The Empire Hotel and whilst you can see it is done by the same company, the space is much smaller and less grandeur than The Empire Hotel. The colour palette is a bit heavy for us of black, pewter and silver with pops of lime green, tangerine and black and white stripes but at the same time, it feels very “New York”.

The Lobby is annexed adjacent to the hotel entrance with a modern fireplace. At the centre is an oversized, circular, patent leather couch complimented by a textured, geometric, hand-crafted wall mural – a look that is striking but also calming. The 10th floor features a lounge area with complimentary coffee and newspapers plus large north-facing windows with sweeping uptown vistas. There is also two PCs with limited free internet access, wireless internet access in your own room is available at an additional cost.

Whilst we don’t agree with their description of this being a luxurious hotel, it is an intimate hotel with an urban edge with its modish guest rooms with views of the bustling streets of Murray Hill and Gramercy Park. Without being in the midst of everything, this east positioned neighbourhood on Manhattan has easy access to the Downtown areas of the eclectic Lower East Side, Greenwich Village and Soho as well as the busy tourist strips of Time Square in the other direction. Due to its position, facilities and limited capacity, we would probably suggest this hotel for leisure travellers rather than business.
