Sydney Design 09: 1- 16 Aug 2009
Sydney Design 09 is the 13th International Design Festival celebrating local and international design with a diverse program of over 70 events between 1-16 August 2009. The activities are in full swing with a range of exhibitions, local and international speakers, tours, markets and workshops designed to engage and inspire across 35+ venues in and around Sydney.
The festival’s main precinct is the Powerhouse Museum and although we must admit that we were a little bit let down of what currently displayed in the exhibitions, some of the events are expected to attract interest such as Eat Green Design, Young Blood: Designers Market and the new media installation Artefact H10515.
We are also yet to check out Workshopped 09 at Chifley Plaza, showcasing new Australian design that is ‘creating a future; inspiring, enhancing or making a difference’. Co-produced with the Powerhouse Museum, the exhibition gives designers the opportunity to take their work beyond prototype. Designers exhibiting include Tomek Archer, Charles Wilson, Gary Galego, David Knott and collaborators Ueno Fukutoshi and Akira Isogawa.
You can also get hands-on in the Bespoke Workshop Series with of workshops for beginners and experienced including couture beading, silversmithing, glassblowing, letterpress design, shoemaking, fashion design, fashion drawing, electronic media arts, tapestry weaving and more.
The winner of the Design NSW; Travelling Scholarship, presented by the Powerhouse Museum and Arts NSW in partnership with the British Council, will also be announced during Sydney Design 09. Valued at $18,000, the scholarship will assist a NSW designer at the beginning of their career undertake a program of professional development overseas.
