OLED wallpaper and displays
Lomox Limited is an OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology innovation and development company in the UK. They have been awarded a grant by the Government-backed Carbon Trust to develop its OLED technology which claims to reduce energy consumption by 60% over existing light sources.
Lomox aims to lower production costs of OLED panels while increasing both the efficiency and size of panels. They plan to make flexible screens that can be taken into meetings and rolled up after use, and outdoor lighting, the first products will be for sale later this year.
“Lighting is a major producer of carbon emissions” said Mark Williamson, Director of Innovations at the Carbon Trust. “This technology has the potential to produce ultra-efficient lighting for a wide range of applications, tapping into a huge global market.”
In 2007, Jonas Samson, an enterprising young designer from the Netherlands invented a light emitting wallpaper as part of his final-year postgraduate degree. The luminious wallpaper utilised existing technology but applied it in a different way by “sandwiching” a number of layers together that combine to produce light. When switched on, it is a visually stunning wall-of-light that can be turned off and on, just like a regular light. The high price for this new technology maybe an issue, however we hope with mass uptake, there will also be a drop in pricing.
We hope OLED lightning will be sufficient and bright enough to light up a room – not just a pretty display as it would beat the purpose of energy efficiency if you still need to compliment with regular lights. Nevertheless, we would definately fancy a luminious OLED wallpaper lighting up our home or office space.
