IKEA Sunnan, solar powered table lamps

The new eco-friendly IKEA Sunnan solar cell table lamps function without electricity. The clever design by Nicolas Cortolezzis is the first solar-powered work lamp from IKEA with a flexible 44 cm adjustable goose neck, available in five sunny colours.

This energy-saving desk lamp features a rechargeable solar cell panel on the lamp stand which transforms sunlight to electrical energy. Fully charged, the backup batteries provide the LED light source with enough energy to run for 3-4 hours. LED consumes 70% less energy and has at least four times longer life than incandescent bulbs in similar lighting.

Pop the panel from the lamp base out during the day and place it outside facing the sky to recharge. Depending on weather conditions, under direct sunlight with no cloud, it will take approximately 9-12 hours to be fully charged. We like how the IKEA Sunnan lamp has no ugly cords which makes it portable anywhere indoors or even outdoor. Great idea for countries like Australia with plenty of sun, pop it back at night and see the world in a new light.

We reckon the lamp is ideally used as a spotlight for any handy craft hobbies or reading a book. NB. It doesn’t have the brightest light if not fully recharged.

Like the design, like the concept BUT only wish the light was brighter. Perhaps the 2nd generation will improve?
