Help Haiti, Donate to grassroot movements and charities

On 12 January 2010, a powerful 7.3 earthquake hit the impoverished nation of Haiti. This was followed more than 30+ strong aftershocks in a massive disaster. For those who are following us on Twitter have hopefully seen some of our tweets and re-tweets to help support charity organisations for Haiti.

Here are also links to important grassroot movements and major international charities for emergency donations. Show your support and donate today. Tomorrow might be too late.

Grassroot movements

Yele Haiti
This is a grassroots movement that builds global awareness for Haiti while helping to transform the country through programs in education, sports, the arts and environment. Yéle’s community service programs include food distribution and mobilizing emergency relief. Grammy-Award winning musician, humanitarian and Goodwill Ambassador to Haiti Wyclef Jean founded Yéle Haiti in 2005. Wyclef Jean raised more than US$400,000 via text message for Haiti in first day.

Architecture for Humanity
By making a donation today you are supporting a grassroots network of architects, designers and building professionals to lend their talents and expertise in communities where there services are most needed and can least be afforded. You know design matters. Help use the power of design to build a more sustainable future in communities around the world. Current fundraising appeal support long-term reconstruction effort for Haiti.

Funds will be divided equally among the rapid response efforts of the United Nations Foundation, the long-term,sustainable rebuilding of homes with Habitat for Humanity, and Dave Matthews Band’s BAMA Works Haitian relief efforts.”

Major international charity organisations

Australian Red Cross is part of The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement made up of 186 National Societies with more than 100 million volunteers worldwide. The Movement’s mission is to prevent or reduce human suffering, wherever it is found. Fundamental Principles of humanity, neutrality and independence guide in this mission. The International Red Cross raised over US$5,000,000 to help Haiti in the past 2 days.

UNICEF is deploying clean water and sanitation supplies, therapeutic foods, medical supplies and temporary shelter to Jacmel and Port-au-Prince. UNICEF will also be focusing on children who have become separated from their families to protect them from harm or exploitation.

CARE plans to start food distributions using stocks of high-protein biscuits from CARE warehouses in Haiti. CARE has 133 staff who are on the ground coordinating with U.N. agencies and other aid organizations to gather more detailed information about the damage and will rapidly scale up response based on those assessments.
