Propellerheads is a name that conjures different images in different imaginations. For some it’s just a gear nerd, for others it’s a production duo and for some people the first thing that jumps to mind is Reason and to a lesser extent, ReBirth.

ReBirth was the first VST offering from the Propellerheads that allowed people to take sounds from expensive classic pieces of hardware and own a piece of history for little to nothing. ReBirth started a new, no nonsense approach to writing music on a computer in a hands on way that made highlighting buttons on a numerical grid seem archaic. Fast forward a decade or so and ReBirth has been born again (no pun intended) but for the mobile set.

ReBirth for iPhone is the exact same piece of software made for Mac- and PC-based platforms. All the sounds and file formats are available for your iPhone and can be uploaded or downloaded to and from your phone for ease use. Far too often music apps have been proprietary file based or has no export option which leads to a frustrated consumer having to bounce out audio in low tech ways.

This is a big step for iPhone music apps and will hopefully push other software companies to widen the capabilities their products currently have. New methods of synchronisation or interoperability will have to follow if people want to keep up with Propellerheads because they are certain to push this app as far as they possibly can as a creative tool and not just a silly loop based game with some bad effects.
