Nintendo DSi game console, we get hands on
Nintendo DSi sent us their latest baby to test out and this is our hands-on experience:
Nintendo DSi Internet web surfing experience
The set up of wireless wifi Internet router was pain-free (Phew!) No router? Get the Wi-fi USB connector. Download the Opera web browser for free, surf webpages and check emails easily with the dual screens with zoom. Text and graphics were sharp but the biggest disappointment was YouTube/video and music streaming malfunctioning as the DSi opera web browser does not support Adobe flash. Twitter worked fine but Facebook had some memory problems… (Hmm)
Nintendo DSi Shop and DsiWare Games and Applications
Currently, there are 5 DSi Ware games available from Nintendo. Downloading games and applications is the future with Apple iTunes currently leading the way. No much choice at the moment, Nintendo promise to update daily titles in the future. No real DSi games shows off the system, Wario Snap is unique but novelty can wear off quickly.
You get 1,000 free points with the console to buy basic, budget and premium games. (Yay!) Currently, there are 3 puzzle and 2 action DSi Ware games available from Nintendo. Paper Plane, Pyoro, Art Style: AQUITE, Art Style: CODE and our pick is WarioWare: Snapped! 1-2 player action of wacky mini-games and challenges with use of internal camera to literally make you a star of the game. (Cheesy? Yes!) Games cost 200 to 500 points each. Buy additional Nintendo points using credit card or at retail shops. Seeing the attention span of casual gamers are quite short now, the future of gaming is downloading smaller size games to entertain for a few days or a week before downloading new ones.
Verdict
We like the larger dual screens, to get the full experience you definitely need to connect the Nintendo DSi to the Internet (DSi shops, games, apps and web browsing). The twin camera takes decent web quality pictures in bright well-lit areas, music player (AAC format, unfortunately it does not support the most common Mp3 music files) is a nice added touch when you get bored of games. The Nintendo DSi console is still relatively expensive at $299 compared to the original DS Lite which is around $179. Let’s hope more innovative games and apps will come in the future!
