Garmin nüvi GPS 3790T
Most people would not put sexy and GPS in the same sentence, but the Garmin GPS Nuvi 3700 series sets the benchmark for GPS design. Currently the thinnest GPS in the world at less than 9mm thick, even slimmer than the iPhone 3GS. Slips in your pocket with ease, use it in the car or when you are walking to avoid getting lost.
We got our hands on the sleek Garmin GPS Nuvi 3790T and put it on real test for weekend, we like the easy to navigate menu layout, modern icons, bright screen, get directions with Aussie accents (Karen or Lee). Some of our suggestions for improvements include a wrist strap so the slim unit doesn’t slip from your hands and earphones port for pedestration mode.
The Garmin Nuvi 3700 series is available in two models – 3790T and 3760. The designers were challenged to develop the thinnest product possible to really fulfill people’s navigation needs; from the practical to the aesthetic. The GPS recently won the Red Dot Design Awards 2010 for product design.
Easy on the eyes, the sharp 4.3inch glass touch screen with multi-touch actions like pinch to zoom. Black brushed aluminium finish on the back and inbuilt-speaker. Weighs 113 grams with a battery life of up to 4 hours. Other features include Bluetooth enable hands-free call, pedestrian mode and Real View Lane Advanced Guidance shows on screen realistic image of intersections with lane indication arrows on your approach making highway ramps and lane exits safer.
The flagship model, Garmin Nuvi 3790T also packs in real-time traffic alerts, voice navigation plus 3D terrain, landmarks and city buildings rendered as they actually appear (metro areas in Sydney and Melbourne). Plus you can customise voice command phrase to activate by talking – it is great when it works but probably needs some more tweaks to make it fool-proof.
Sad but true, research by Garmin revealed that while Australian men are more likely than women to turn to a GPS for directions, they are nearly three times less likely than women to take directions from anyone! Well, there are no excuses to get yourself from A to B in style now…
