World Expo 2010, Shanghai China

There is less than a year to go to World Expo 2010 in Shanghai China. City area of 5.28-square-kilometres for exhibitions, events and forums with the Expo theme, “Better City, Better Life”. Shanghai hopes to build a powerful and lasting pilot example of sustainable and harmonious urban living. So far, 190 countries and 48 international organisations have confirmed participation in Expo 2010. Having visited the much polluted city of Shanghai a few years ago and others on the list, I look forward to the outcomes of this expo. Here is a sneak peek on some artist renditions of some country pavilions including concepts, initiatives and expected results. Quite impressive visions and work to be realised…

For example, the UAE pavilion has broken ground with inspiration from the form of a sand dune, the pavilion is a reference to this symbolic feature of the desert landscape shared by each of the seven emirates. With capacity for 450 people and enclosing 3,000 square metres of exhibition space, it will be one of the largest structures to be built for the 2010 Shanghai Expo and will highlight the UAE’s progressive stance on sustainability. Responding to the Expo’s ‘Better Cities, Better Lives’ theme, the pavilion will showcase projects such as the Masdar Initiative, a new 6 million square metre carbon neutral zero waste community in Abu Dhabi, intended to become a centre for the development of new ideas for energy production.

Definitely an interesting expo of creative spaces to keep eye on and see what issues each country will focus their efforts on. Hopefully, it won’t end up as a grand-scale show of just talk with no real actions. Let’s improve cities and create a better living now before it is too late.

Here is a somewhat over the top preview:

The architecture at World Expo 2010 runs from the sublime to the ridiculous. We are running a poll at our blog about the best looking European pavilion and, so far, Spain is in the lead.
