W San Francisco

In the heart of the SoMa district right next to the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, I step into the funky lobby of W Hotel San Francisco part of Starwood Hotels. Their entire concept is to appeal to all five senses from the public spaces to your own hotel room and the hotel also incorporate sustainability in everything they do to reduce their environmental footprint. The public spaces is outfitted with interior that express the brand from the colour palettes to the style including lounges, day beds, fire places, breakout areas, leisure pastimes, food and cocktails within reach, music in the background and nicely scented lifts.

Once stepping into the hotel room, you will find panoramic views of the Bay Bridge and the city skyline. The recently renovated room itself is also a candy to the eye with whimsical Asian influences like Chinese checkers and origami butterflies. Downstairs, there is a gym with an indoor heated lap pool, a cabana-ringed outdoor terrace plus Bliss Spa and XYZ Restaurant. Adopting the customs of this country, I’ve started to eat like the Americans and we head straight to XYZ… I’m usually a savoury type of person and the food is beautiful but it is actually the banana pannacotta that leaves me speechless… yum!

W San Francisco is a 404-room, 4-diamond hotel and in 2008, the hotel earned the energy star for superior energy performance. The green program at W Hotel San Francisco started as a grass roots gathering of employees who wanted to “do the right thing.” In 2007, the staff submitted a petition signed by 34 percent of the employees asking hotel management to support a green program. It was started by one of the cooks at XYZ restaurant. By adopting practices that support sustainability, move toward zero waste, reduce its climate footprint, and conserve and restore the natural resources and ecosystems, W Hotel proves that a luxury hotel can adopt without sacrificing any of the services or amenities.
