Turquoise, Colour of 2010
Pantone has announced 15-5519 TURQUOISE as its colour of the year for 2010 – this luminous hue combines the serene qualities of blue and the invigorating aspects of green. As one of my favourite colours as a child, turquoise is transporting me to a nostalgic space in time but also an exciting new year.
This world-renowned authority on colour picked the sunny Mimosa as the shade for 2009 and the choice for 2010 of the tranquil blue-green recalls tropical waters and clear skies. Again, the choice is less dramatic than 2008′s moody blue iris or 2007′s fiery chilli pepper red. Turquoise may work in clothing however I think it is most perfect for interior decorating for its calming effects and how it offsets different colours. The sea and spa colours creates a sense of well-being to any interior space whether it is the home or the office – much needed in today’s fast paced and often stressful environments.
I find turquoise being a great accent colour and you may find endless inspiration of how to implement this colour trend in interiors designs and styling. It is also predicted to be one of this year’s wedding colours with Pantone working with wedding dress manufacturers to help brides co-ordinate their big day as it works very well with white. I personally also like seeing the colour matched with black and grey.

Pantone says, “In many cultures, Turquoise occupies a very special position in the world of color,” explains Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “It is believed to be a protective talisman, a color of deep compassion and healing, and a color of faith and truth, inspired by water and sky. Through years of color word-association studies, we also find that Turquoise represents an escape to many – taking them to a tropical paradise that is pleasant and inviting, even if only a fantasy.”

I can relate as when growing up in Sweden where most of the year is in the grip of chilly months, turquoise was a colour that reminded me of Summer and dreams of getaway to sandy beaches and warm waters of the Mediterranean, Maldives or West Indies. I also loved the crisp day of white snow, crisp air and clear skies. This fresh yet calming colour will be great to re-connect and surround myself in 2010 which I predict will be a pretty busy one!
