Sydney Winter Festival & Bondi Bergstation

Yodel-aieee-ooooo! Last night was the opening of this year’s Sydney Winter Festival under the howling moon and fake snow in backdrop of the majestic St Mary’s Cathedral in CBD. The festival will continue to 4 July with its own Alpine Ski Hut for festival goers to experience the Après Ski vibe and Alpine Food Market for enjoying treats from alpine regions surrounding the heart of the event, a seemingly popular outdoor ice rink.

Having grown up in Sweden, spoiled with easy access to huge and smooth ice hockey rinks as well as frozen lakes in winter, I may be a harsh critic as the 600m2 outdoor ice rink seems rather tiny, crowded and chopped up in comparison. Having said that, this is a cosy and fun event with the aspiration to bring that Alpine feel to the Big Smoke. After a sell-out season in Sydney last year, The Winter Festival organisers will also set up an outpost “The Bondi Bergstation” at the iconic Bondi Beach from July 16-25 – transforming Australia’s most famous stretch of sand into a winter wonderland.

The outdoor ice rink overlooking the ocean will sit inside an European style ski village complete with its own Alpine Ski Hut. The German word “Bergstation” refers to the highest spot reachable by snow transports (ski lifts, cable car etc) in alpine ski resorts in Austria, Switzerland and Germany. The Bergstation is typically set alongside traditional wooden chalet hospitality (ski huts) where visitors can enjoy the perfect vista over the summits from an open terrace and winter foods. Entry to festival is free whilst tickets are required for access to ice rink and hire of skates. Stay warm, good folks!

Update from event organiser: “For security reasons and to support the local surf clubs we have decided to collect a nominal fee of $4 (includes $1 donation to Bondi Surf Life Saving) for entering the Bergstation event site without an ice skating ticket. The proceeds will be used to cover additional, necessary security measures and for urgent renovation work at the local Bondi Surf Life Saving Clubs.”
