Sydney Design 09: Saturday in Design
Sydney Design 2009 has arrived to town with creativity oozing the big smoke! I am still recovering and digesting Saturday in Design which is an annual trade event for the design community, taking place on alternative years in Sydney and Melbourne.
On Saturday 1 August 2009, Australia’s premier designer furniture, finishes, fixtures and lighting showrooms opened their doors in Sydney’s inner city suburbs of Surry Hills, Darlinghurst, Chippendale, Glebe, Alexandria, Mascot, Waterloo and Redfern. It was also a great opportunity for new designers and students to launch themselves among well-known brands in one magic day.
The normally quiet showrooms felt like pretty doll houses coming to life in an extravaganza as exclusive party venues flooding with food and booze in amazing designer environments. Our senses were touched and busy absorbing everything plus everyone around us.
Intoxicated by all the buzz, we had courtesy limos and shuttle buses taking us around. One day wasn’t quite enough for us to visit all the showrooms but I have lifted out some of the highlights and design trends we managed to spot.
