Sydney Design 09: Electrolux feat. Alex Perry & Tetsuya

The Electrolux brand is clearly reflected in everything from their products to the office space, the showroom and brand ambassadors such as Fashion Designer Alex Perry and Top Chef Tetsuya Wakuda. It was a pleasure to see both of these celebrities working the floor on Saturday in Design.

Alex Perry was expressing how much he loves creating uncomfortable but fabulous haute couture for women and his crossover into home interiors as he has ventured into a residential design project to be revealed next year. He discussed his association with Electrolux fabric care and his tests of the Electrolux Iron Aid Dry. Yes, if you can afford an expensive gown, you can probably afford an expensive dryer that won’t destroy your garments…

Tetsuya Wakuda was hosting a 1.5hrs induction cooking demonstration and it was a privilege to watch him cook and taste the divine food in a fun intimate session with open dialogue. He made it look so easy! Frankly, I was quite intimidated by gas stoves when I first moved to Australia and am happy to see that this safer but also more convenient option of induction stoves are finally arriving here. The continued trends of open-living allows kitchens to also be the centre-point and hangout. Another current trend also seems to be contrasting colurs of black and white or how about all black! This colour trend can actually also been seen in bathrooms which we spotted at Rogersellers in the PYD building in Waterloo and at Schiavello in Surry Hills.

I also caught up with some of the Electrolux product managers who showed me some great creative concepts made by students such as a funky version of a low-seated barbecue which allows people to gather around more intimately. My first association was how it reminded me of traditional Japanese barbecue where you sit on the floor and cook together but the idea actually comes from a good old Aussie camp-fire.

The global manufacturer of domestic and professional appliances, opened the Electrolux Home Products head quarter in Mascot, Sydney last year with a specially-built and environmentally-friendly building including a unique showroom. My dad who lives in Sweden has worked for Electrolux for almost 30 years and I hope to show him this showroom next time he visit me. Being a household brand that I have grown up with and the first company I actually had my very own first work experience with, it is nice to see them bring household products into Australia in high quality standard and style. I am also impressed by their office design and innovation centre that represents progressive and modern architecture with a Scandinavian feel.

The four-level building is flooded in natural light with big glass windows and blonde wood panelling. It is boasting functionality and energy efficiency. The curtain walling system also plays an essential and characteristic role for their green building rating. The open-plan showroom highlights the latest Electrolux innovations and it is also designed as an event space suited for cooking classes, cocktail parties, gala dinners or even fashion catwalk events.

Their extensions of brand associated with product design, interior, fashion, cooking and events taking place under one roof strongly relates to my own view of brand and style to be infused in every touch point.
