By George! 2009 Hidden Networks, City of Sydney
Wednesday 3 June was the deadline for creative people to submit their proposals to help transform eight Sydney laneways into works of art. By George! 2009 Hidden Networks project will see temporary artworks installed to enliven laneways and forgotten spaces off George Street during City of Sydney’s Art & About in October.
Unfortunately, I missed last year’s first ever By George! project which was said to include military tanks roll through Sydney lanes, giant Tetris shapes wedged between buildings, gutters transformed into canvasses and elaborate balloons installed to inspire the imagination. Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP says By George! explores the potential of our laneways, bringing them back to life with creativity, innovation and new energy through high quality artworks.
The City of Sydney has engaged Curator and urban designer Dr Steffen Lehmann to develop the By George! 2009 Hidden Networks program which will focus on collaboration and sustainability. Each proposal must come from an interdisciplinary team which includes at least one artist; at least one architect, urban designer, landscape architect; and at least one “other” person such as a musician, poet, scientist or psychologist.
Based on the City’s Sustainable Sydney 2030 vision, four topics have been chosen and each proposal need to think about:
• Climate change and urban transformation
• Crossovers and collaborations
• Public Domain and urban regeneration
• Recycling of the installation and site-specific response
Up to eight laneways will be transformed with temporary artworks by the selected teams during October. The installations are intended to remain in place until the end of The Sydney Festival in late January 2010.
Art & About runs from 2-25 October 2009 and is produced by the City of Sydney. I hope to be back with some personal photos from By George! 2009 Hidden Networks if I am in Sydney this time around!

It has been revealed that a seven metre bar highlighting climate change, a barcode of white fluorescent tubes, a canopy of birdcages and forgotten birdsongs, a prosthetic skin with its heartbeat pulsing through a laneway, a pop-up kitchen and nightclub, and a stunning temporary ‘infinity’ forest in the City Centre to be some of the ideas for this years Laneways By George! Hidden Networks.
“We received more than 500 registrations and 68 submissions for this year’s Laneways By George! Hidden Networks project to transform and explore the potential of City laneways with creative, innovative and inspiring high quality temporary artworks,” said Lord Mayor Clover Moore MP.
