supperclub San Francisco + LoveEvolution 2009
supperclub is a place for dining, drinking, dancing and a myriad of artistic performance but also something more that cannot be defined. It is not an ordinary restaurant or club; it is a place you should only visit if you are up for a fully unique experience. Owner Bert van der Leden’s vision is a place where you have the freedom to just be yourself or whoever you dream up for the night…
From the outside, all we see is a set of intriguing golden doors and there is a queue inside in front of Le Bar Rouge which is the beating heart of the supperclub – red, sexy and hot shiny bar with spinning lights of disco balls and a neon lit red “BAR” icon. It is linked to La Salle Prive, a private room with one large private black bed with bond and hostage theme said to be perfect for small parties and private dinners, but also to relax or have a more private massage or tarot reading session. There is a women only restroom as well as large pink padded unisex and wheelchair accessible restrooms – Les Toilettes Pinque – to expand the thoughts of what you could do in a bathroom…
We enter the white doors to the grand La Salle Neige, the white dining room – it isn’t a restaurant, it isn’t a stage, it isn’t a gallery, it is a white Gesammtskunstwerk, combining the seven pillars of food and drink, art, music, performance, visuals, entourage, staff and guests. We lean back on comfortable white daybeds and are greeted by the staff that are designers, sculptors, masseurs, musicians, actors, singers, art students, and other various skills and talents that make the supperclub. The architecture is designed by Concrete Amsterdam, suggesting you to disconnect from the outside world.
Music, food, art, performances, staff and guests all contribute to all 5 senses being stimulated. On the menu “A la Carte” does not exist which is a blessing for someone indecisive as myself. I am happy savouring a set 4 course dinner served to me while relaxing on a giant white bed. The set menu is beautifully put together by Chef Guus Wickenhagen, an experienced supperclub chef having worked for 7 years in supperclub Amsterdam. He is a culinary wizard and every week a new surprise menu is created to tickle and surprise your taste buds. New combinations, new flavours, new recipes, new presentations… yeah, all existing expectations fly out the window and a new experience is delivered on our bed. Forget formal dining etiquette – shoes must come off to completely enjoy the decadence of dining in bed. Make sure you wear your nicest socks or have a pedicure beforehand though…
supperclub is created by artists and is a home for artists. The white layout of the room is the ultimate canvas for their imagination with exhibitions ranging from paintings sculptures, installations, photographs, mixed media and beyond. Anything and everything can be expected at supperclub. From fresh local DJ’s to international celebrity talent – both worlds collide at supperclub. The resident DJ and musical Director Michael Anthony composes a variety of mellow tunes during first course to more upbeat vibe at dessert. Michael and DJ B.Smiley, another resident DJ, have both worked on the various tracks on the supperclub CDs and compiled the Addiction CD. 600,000 of these have been sold and Addiction is the first one in the series of a 9 CD set – “sins”.
supperclub is an experimental and creative platform. Creative Director Auberon Shull is a multi-talented performer and sculptor transporting guests to a wonderful and beautiful world that can also be shocking and cutting edge. The VJ’s, work with moving images projected on the wall, floor or ceiling in tandem with the DJ’s and performers, streaming live video and create interactive pieces with the guests. The Thursday night of our visit is the night of the LoveEvolution as it is Love Week in San Francisco and on the following Saturday we actually experienced the dance music parade itself which showcased floats travelling towards the electrifying festival. It is not your ordinary parade, there are no fencing as everyone is encouraged to join in – we have included some photos in the photo gallery. The 6th Annual Festival celebrates love and support NextAid as well as DJs and promotes various clubs with after-parties.
Whilst the unique experience at supperclub is a fabulous selling point, it can also be a curse as people may perceive this place as one-off experience with novelity that quickly wears off which is a shame as this the club wishes every visit to be unique but that is only possible with the support of an audience as even artists have to make a living. Well, I hope everyone will continue to keep this place real, raw and unique. supperclub currently exist in Amsterdam, San Francisco, Singapore, Istanbul and is opening up in London next month.
