State of Design Festival 2010, Design for Everyone

mecho | the style black book is proud to support State of Design 2010 in Melbourne, 14-25 July 2010: Change by Design. Three spotlight areas – Built Environment, Digital and Mobility – provide a perspective on projects, ideas and opportunities for sustainability in response to the theme. The public program Design for Everyone includes free events and here is a selected list which may be worth sharing with anyone interested:

FASHION

Curating Desire: Designing Melbourne’s Retail Landscape – Hear about the changing shape of Melbourne’s retail landscape, including shop design, laneways, malls and shopping strips.

Dirty Puppet at The Signet Bureau – Specially commissioned animation at The Signet Bureau.

Look.Stop.Shop – A design-led walk through Melbourne CBD with a select group of retail designers who’ve created special window displays and in-store installations exploring sustainable design.

DESIGN/ARCHITECTURE

Clean Lines – At the Abbotsford Convent, there is a clothes line running from the entrance of the area through each studio for visitors to discover a diverse range of work; opportunities to meet designers, learn about studio’s development and purchase work directly from manufacturer.

Raising the Bar – a licensed constructed bar made out of recycled junk by ten architects using ten different types of material; bar will be open to architects and public upon completion.

Audio Design Museum – The ADM allows a look – and listen – behind the scenes via the voices of designers, architects and others who have shaped the development of design where they live.

PERFORMANCE/INTERACTIVE

Performance: Lace By Design – A performance at the National Gallery of Victoria rethinking lace.

QRioCity – a virtual treasurehunt around Melbourne CBD; finding clues on your mobile phone

The Gertrude Street Projection Festival – a free night festival of animations, stills, and digital art in all its forms are projected onto the pavements, buildings and walls of Gertrude Street.

SUSTAINABILITY

The Secret Life of Things Launch – The Secret Life of Things project is one of the first to specifically communicate life cycle thinking and design decision making in a new media context – short animated video series. The Secret Life of Things Launch will unveil the first video and resource pack and will include a Q & A panel discussion with animator Nicholas Kallincos, LCA expert Tim Grant and ecodesign adviser Leyla Acaroglu.

There are whole heap of other free events going on but we thought this would give you some insight and there will also be some unique events requiring tickets such as design:made:made:trade 2010 which is created for designers seeking collaboration with manufacturers, retailers, architects, building and interiors industry specifiers and export buyers. During July, mecho will welcome two guest bloggers exhibiting at DMT2010 – the emerging fashion label The Unfurling Gently Sneak and graphic design studio The Foundy. Stay connected!
