About Smirnoff Black Room Event
We live in a climate of sensory overload. Everyday we are bombarded with an abundance of sights, sounds, smells, textures and tastes that can leave the senses strained and prevent us from enjoying the simple pleasures in life, such as the enticing smell of freshly ground coffee, or the lilting sound of rolling waves.
For the first time in Australia, Smirnoff Black has created a unique environment that recognises the impact today’s environment has. and invites visitors to re-engage with each of the five senses. Represented as a sensory journey, The Smirnoff Black Room will take guests on a creative voyage of sight, touch, sound and smell, culminating in perhaps the most satisfying of all senses, taste.
The Smirnoff Black Room will consist of a series of artworks from Australia’s finest creative talents. The artists have all been commissioned to create an exclusive piece of work that emulates their own personal interpretation of the ‘Essence of Black’.
Sight
The exhibition takes as its starting point the sense of ‘sight, comprising works from three artists, all displaying a very different expression of the ‘Essence of Black’.
Oscar shortlisted animation specialists PRA will display a graphic installation. Managing Director, Sam White explains; “Working with the idea of an art gallery style installation, we will create a piece of original art that will appear stroke by stroke, drawing itself, in front of the viewer’s very eyes and will play out a story across a number of scenes. The scenes will start in an art nouveau inspired style and move through the decades, all the while depicting the ‘the Essence of Black’ in an interesting and artistic way.”
Renowned celebrity portrait and fashion photographer Cameron Grayson will experiment with black perspex to produce a series of shots that combine the essence of black and the sensory experience of sight. The images will challenge the viewer; as they will look at one thing yet observe something entirely different and unexpected reflected back.
Painter, installation and video artist James McGrath, will draw careful attention to the way in which objects are perceived, by creating a series of small LCD screens emerged in liquid in a bell jar. The screens will depict imagery of black and white printed fabrics, which will be continuously billowing and folding. The visitor has to find ways of viewing the screens in the jar and interpreting what they see.
Touch
Bringing a tactile element to the Smirnoff Black Room experience, the ‘touch’ room will include handcrafted works from four artists that have been commissioned to create a box to hold the Smirnoff Black bottle.
Fashioned in paper (paper engineer, Benja Harney), metal (revered jewellery designer Matt Weston), leather (bespoke shoemaker and leather technician, Andrew McDonald) and glass (sculpture, Morgan Shimeld), the objects will offer insight into the artists’ interpretation of Smirnoff Black, and invite our fingers to explore the various forms and textures of the boxes.
Sound
AFI award winning composer Tom Schutzinger, of Decoder Ring fame invites visitors to immerse themselves in an audio haven in the ‘sound room’. Schutzinger has created an exclusive soundscape for Smirnoff Black that evokes a sense of mystique and beauty to arrest the listener. Individual sets of headphones will be set up, enabling them to be absorbed and seduced by the sound of ‘Black’.
Smell
The scent of Smirnoff Black, as created by expert Spanish perfumer Agusti Vidal, will infuse the event with an aroma that captures the very essence of Smirnoff Black – rich spices and hints of chocolate. Each guest will be given this unique fragrance as a sample to take away.
Taste
Concluding the journey, The Smirnoff Black bar will invite consumers to engage with the all-important sense of taste. Guests will be served extraordinary cocktails that have been created by leading mixologists, to bring to life the rich and distinctive taste of Smirnoff Black vodka.
Diageo spokesperson Mary Perebzak said, “We wanted to create a very special experience for visitors to the Smirnoff Black Room. These gifted artists have been selected for their unique craft and techniques to create unique works inspired by what ‘black’ means to them. Collectively they will provide an interactive environment where visitors can take the time to re-engage with their senses, and discover the unique taste of Smirnoff Black vodka.”
Using a 150-year-old copper pot still, expert distillers handcraft Smirnoff Black vodka in small batches, imparting a rich, rounded and distinctive profile. Smirnoff Black vodka revives the legacy of copper-pot distillation, creating a distinct smoothness and uncompromising character. In adopting this style of distillation, Smirnoff Black pays tribute to Russia’s golden age of 18th century vodka production, a time when the copper pot-still method was used to create hand-crafted vodkas.
The exclusive opening of the Smirnoff Black Room will take place at the Australian Technology Park from 7pm on March 11th 2010 for exclusive guests by invitation only and VIP ticket holders.
