Mr. Brainwash New York solo debut, Icons art exhibition
In February, I got invited to Mr. Brainwash first solo debut exhibition in New York titled Icons. Unfortunately, I was not able to join the convergence of art, media and fashion at this occasion. The controversial Pop Street Artist unveiled his exhibition Icons of paintings and large-scale sculptural installation in the Meatpacking District, and has kindly shared some photos.
My first personal encounter of Mr. Brainwash work was actually in the streets of hip and trendy Meatpacking District last year, during a stay at The Standard hotel and a wander around the neighbourhood. During his attempt in making the ultimate street art documentary during the last decade, Mr. Brainwash emerged as a prolific figure on the international art scene with his highly pop-art inspired murals of celebrities. In 2009, he designed the cover of Madonna’s greatest hits album, Celebration as well as 15 different covers for the accompanying vinyls, singles and DVDs. Icons opened to the public on 14 February and the first 300 people to attend the opening received a signed, hand-finished, limited edition print. Again, very bummed to have missed out!

Mr. Brainwash is the moniker of Los Angeles-based filmmaker and Pop Street Artist Thierry Guetta. In June 2008, he debuted one of Los Angeles’s hottest exhibitions, Life is Beautiful – a massively successful survey of the French-born transplant’s work, held at the old CBS Studios Building on Sunset Boulevard. It featured larger than life installations such as a huge robot constructed of old televisions, a life size recreation of Edward Hopper’s Nighthawks and a pyramid made from 20,000 books. Let’s also not forget his piece Campbell’s Tomato Spray, a take on Andy Warhol’s Campbell Soup Can.
Thanks to Mr. Brainwash for sharing some photos below from his NY solo debut and creative space.
