Future kitchen design concept by Electrolux

We have all been hearing news about how the population will explode in next few decades and according to the UN, 74% of the world population will live in cities by 2050. Now, is time to re-think how we live in high density population areas – in terms of space, energy, materialism vs minimalism and the environment. View the video with a provocative concept for future kitchen design, recently presented by Electrolux at Designboost in Stockholm!

Imagine never having to use pans or pots again or having to look up a recipe in a cookbook. This is a provocative vision of an integrated solution functioning as a kitchen table, cooking surface and bar all in one. No doubt, this is an intelligent thought of an amorphous, interchangeable cooking surface that adapts to your needs.

Simply place your ingredients on the surface, the appliance then analyses the ingredients and presents a list of suitable recipes. After deciding on a recipe, you mark an area with your hand to determine how large the cooking area should be. The desired depth of the surface is created by simply pressing the hand against the malleable material. After getting the required width and depth, set temperature and time with a simple touch of a finger!

This concept also builds on the continued trend of open-living that allows kitchens to be the centre-point and hangout place at home. I do wonder how energy-saving and how much this type of technology would cost to develop. Hopefully, this is something we can imagine in everyone’s kitchen and not for the privileged. With respect that design, R&D and quality cost money, and if the concept becomes reality, I hope people will embrace new technology to improve their standard of living sooner rather than later and bring costs down. During 2009 Saturday in Design in Sydney, I attended a showcase hosted by masterchef Tetsuya and was surprised to see how long it has taken for the safer and more convenient option of induction stoves to finally arrive to Australia although still with baby steps.

While still just a concept, it is promising to see big brands thinking about how to efficiently create sustainable living spaces in the near future and improve the way we live.
