Batumi Aquarium by Henning Larsen Architects
Danish Henning Larsen Architects has won first prize in the invited competition for a new aquarium at Batumi seaport in The Republic of Georgia. The 2,000m2 aquarium will replace the previous one and will be situated on the beach side adjacent to Batumi 6 May Park featuring a dolphinarium and zoo. Check out concept images below of the creative spaces both interior and exterior.
The design is influenced by the characteristic pebbles of the Batumi beach, continually shaped by the wash of the waves from the Black Sea. Personally, this project reminds me of a creative workshop from a design course I did a while back, where we had to look at basic objects from nature or man-made to jog our creativity by imagining what design the object could inspire or symbolise if blown up in proportion or minimised.

Batumi Aquarium is set to become a spectacular landmark offering visitors a state-of-the art education, entertainment and a visually stimulating journey through the different seas – The Aegean Sea, The Mediterranean Sea, The Indian Ocean, The Black Sea and The Red Sea. The building will stand out as an iconic rock formation visible from both land and sea – with four self-supporting exhibition areas where each of the four stones represents a particular marine biotype. The central, multi-purpose space in connection with the aquarium will fit a café and retail spaces with a flexible layout for presentations and workshops.
Although no confirmed date of completion, it is exciting to see this part of the world highlighted on the map with the development of exciting creative spaces.
