Urban Uprising Gallery, Neon City by Shannon Cress

The Urban Uprising gallery opened in Sydney six months ago with some of the most iconic urban art images in the world including Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Beejoir, Pure Evil, Faile and more. The gallery is dedicated to not only introducing urban art to a new audience and allowing collectors to get their hands on precious pieces but also bringing international artists to our Aussie shores. Recently, the gallery also displayed the amazing pieces from Meggs, Ben Frost and Numskull from our previous featured art battle at Worlds End Studio until they were auctioned off to raise money for Skateistan (a charity building the first skate park in Afghanistan).

The art gallery is also working with established as well as up and coming Australian urban artists. One of the bright young talents in Australian art, Shannon Crees will be holding her first solo show at Urban Uprising 17-30 September 2009. It is a shame that we will miss this exhibition as we will be out of town during this period but for anyone around, why not drop by and check it out.

Shannon will bring a new selection of her colourful and optimistic works together to create “Neon City”. Embraced by the urban art scene in London, Shannon has already been included in the high profile line up of ‘the best graffiti artists in the world’ at Banksy’s Cans Festival. Here in Australia she recently took first place in the 2009 Wall to Wall Mural Art competition.

Describing herself as an “accidental street artist”, Shannon fell in love with street art in the backstreets of London. As well as being invited to take part in the Cans Festival, she collaborated with Deadbeat Donny and Pure Evil in the UK, before returning to Australia where she has continued to develop her distinctive style. Shannon’s background in fashion design and illustration has a significant impact on her artwork, which utilises built up layers and the textures of mixed media. The Sydney based creative now dedicates most of her time to large scale artworks.

“Now I find myself looking at blank walls and seeing faces and landscapes, as if you were laying in the grass finding pictures in the clouds. I love creating something unusual and it is always a surprise what results. I prefer to work with existing elements of a found object to discover an image”.

Shannon Crees has exhibited widely in Sydney, as well as featuring in exhibitions in London and New York and was represented at the 2009 Melbourne Art Show by Urban Uprising.
