Spring Racing Fashion Style tips for him
Our September guest blogger and Stylist Jeff Lack shares his head-to-toe tips for Spring Racing season:
Blokes, there is probably no other day in your life when you’ll dress up more plus have tonnes of fun doing so – well, except perhaps for your Wedding Day!
For this reason, bust out a statement hat and show your personality! Straw hats are big for Spring including Fedoras and Panamas – please leave the Felt hats for Autumn carnival! For the fashion-forward, I am a big fan of the classic Flat Cap. Don’t be concerned with colour matching the hat to your overall look, but do opt for subtle links such as with your belt or shoes.

Spring Racing suits are definitely not business suits, so don’t try and get away with your typical 9-to-5 pin-stripe! Ideally, light colours such as grey and beige are perfect Spring daytime attire. Cue ‘Mad Men’ classic 1960’s style silhouettes.
If you’re not inclined to a wear the flower of the Race Day, definitely pull out a pocket square and match to your shirt or shoes – NOT to the tie, believe it or not!
For the fashion-forward, I suggest trying a playful feather on your lapel instead. Likewise, old fashion braces could be preferred to a belt.

In the shoe department lace-ups are a must – absolutely no boots or loafers – or for the more adventurous go for wing-tip Brogues. And while you’re at it, why not have some fun with your socks, again referencing to your overall colour scheme or look.

My golden rule for dressing for Race Day is less flesh and more dress! The Race Day tradition originates from a conservative background (think of the Royal family!) – it’s about elegance and glamour not sex appeal. Always check that you can sit comfortably in the dress, so don’t go too far above the knee if you can avoid it.
Stylistically for this season, you can choose from off-the-shoulder in seasonal colours from the muted palette like apricot, silver, nude, or splash florals in 1950’s A-line styles.
A discreet clutch is the bag of choice for the day. Jewellery should also be minimal ensuring that your statement piece remains either your hat or dress. Everyday watches can often take away from a beautiful outfit, so leave themat home and ask a nice boy for the time!
Finally, when competing in Fashions on the Field or being papped, remember the ladylike rule of taking your Sunnies off first!
Ladies and Gents; Although Derby Day calls for Black & White, but for any other race meetings embrace colour and keep the black to a minimal.
