Sneakerpedia
Shoe emporium Footlocker have launched what they hope will become the largest online sneaker archive in the world. Sneakerpedia is a community “run by sneaker heads, for sneaker heads”, hoping to gather the collections of those sneaker obsessed around the world into an online hub, noting each shoe’s respective histories and variations. Footlocker describes it as a community, not a marketplace as the sole (no pun intended) purpose is to catalogue sneaker freaks’ obsessions rather than push their own advertising campaigns.
Those who love their kicks are encouraged to photograph their collections, upload their photos and use detailed tag words to describe their sneakers, including the material, stitching and linings, where they bought them from and how long they queued.
Users can even search by association – they can find out whether Kanye favours Nikes over Vans, or what colour Reeboks Pharrell wears on a Tuesday afternoon. Much like the well-known online information source, Wikipedia, users of the site will be able to search and add to existing content, building up the information and making the resource bigger and better.
Sneakerpedia held a launch party in London last month for a small group of the world’s top sneaker collectors, who are currently pre-populating the site with their own collections to give the database a head start. Sneakerpedia, a Wikipedia for sneaker heads, will open to the masses shortly. Stay tuned.
