Sydney-based fashion label Saint Augustine Academy Autumn/Winter 2010 mens collection is evocatively titled “The Lamentations of Euchrid the Mute”. Designer Alvin Manalo drew inspiration from Nick Cave’s 1989 dark and gothic novel “And The Ass Saw The Angel” for this collection.

Enjoy the storytelling images from the collection that explores the narrative and themes behind the novel about Euchrid Eucrow, an outcast among outcasts. Born mute to a drunken mother and a father who spends his days building vicious traps and his nights building delicate towers of cards. Euchrid has a mind that seethes with words to express his vision of the world around him.

Whilst still retaining the labelʼs signature and forward-thinking, the use of fabrics such as oxford cloth, velvet, cotton gauze, bamboo and alpaca are direct references to the tone, period and garb in the novel. It is also evident in the sombre colour palette and old-world detailing.

What we love about Alvin’s designs, is the courage to be different with no sacrifice on good quality and traditional tailoring of garments. Last year, he brought a new lease of life into what we now think is becoming his signature shorts as tailored suit attire. This season, we are thrilled to see the Texan cravat and floppy bow tie being unleashed into fashion again.

Alvin Manalo was one of the creative minds we put the limelight on in our repertoir of 2009 guest bloggers and we continue to be amazed by his creativity. His label surely seems to have kicked off 2010 in style by dressing festival favourites and indie darlings The Horrors, Friendly Fires, The Black Lips and The XX, during their recent visits to Sydney. SAA is also hitting new international grounds including NYC again. Plans are also already in the works for an exciting and unique Individual Collection show at 2010 Rosemont Australian Fashion Week in May. Keep your eyes out for the new womenswear collection too!
