2010 Summer Trends: Men Hairstyles
For over 15 years, I have now been a hair dresser both in London and Sydney, and I have noticed the number of male clients on the rise, particularly in the last 5 years. Sydney is a fashionable town, and the boys are up there with the girls in terms of grooming and personal style. Men hairstyles have evolved to reflect this, and a large amount of our time in the salon is spent with male clients who are keen to complete their look with a fashion-forward hairstyle. Short back-and-sides begone!
The salon team recently completed two male photographic shoots as above, which showed off a range of styles and there are a few definite trends this summer:
Long and textured – long hair has been in for boys for a while. Think David Beckham when he was playing for Real Madrid. Longer styles need to be sculptured to give structure, and be maintained with regular use of styling creams.
The rockabilly – the skinny jeans of hair can only be worn by those with the personal flair to pull it off. Think a modern Elvis – less shiny and stiff but still a quiff. The hair is longer on top, tapered at the sides, and dragged forward and upwards using wax or paste. Josh Homme from Queens of The Stone Age rocks the billy.
The groomed rock star – the Mullet is dead, long live the Mop! The MGMT boys work a shaggy layered cut with length around the ears and brushed forward. This style works best on hair that hasn’t been washed for a few days or you can use a salt spray product to give it a “dirty” effect.
As our male clients are always interested in recommendations for styling products; we stock two product ranges of Original&Mineral (O&M) and Kevin Murphy. In fact, with the current season trends of undercuts and androgynous haircuts for women, the men hair styling is selling very strongly. With any short hairstyles, at-home styling is paramount, and our clients are all very keen students of home styling.
