On|Off London Fashion Week 09 feat. Simon Ekrelius

On|Off is the UK’s original, independent fashion showcase during London Fashion Week, uniquely bridging the gap between on and off schedule designers. It is praised by international press and buyers for creating a unique platform to showcase designer collections, by pushing the boundaries of contemporary exhibition space. We were proud to hear that at the time mecho Featured Contributor Simon Ekrelius was selected to participate and even though he had to drop his commitment to mecho Contributors network to focus, we are happy to support his journey.

Over the past eleven seasons, On|Off’s pioneering approach has attracted some of the most exciting talent from the UK and internationally such as Pam Hogg, Hannah Marshall, Jasper Conran, Gareth Pugh, Peter Pilloto, Aminaka Wilmont, Gardem, Karen Walker and Sinha Stanic. Each season, a panel of industry experts select four innovative and promising designers to showcase their works as part of a collaborative catwalk show, On|Off Presents…

One of the highlights of recent London Fashion Week 2009 was indeed Simon Ekrelius Spring/Summer 2010 Women’s collection “Kika” at On|Off. The Kika collection embraces the industrialist architecture of the Pompidou Centre in Paris. “Kika” comes from a character in one of Almodóvar’s films. Lines and blocks of pale and bold colours (such as black, pewter, light green, crème, soft yellow and white) create a layered interpretation of the Pompidou. This evolving and unpredictable print design epitomises Ekrelius’s asymmetric style. Boxy cuts are juxtaposed with strong prints on silk jersey, and the addition of exquisite beaded and bleached details on cotton. Silk organza and chiffon together with cotton canvas are used with effortless attention to shoulders and hips. Transparent shorts, intricate waist-cut blazers and a wild cut French seamed organza dress feature in the collection, as well as high waisted balloon pleated trousers and more. Ekrelius’ work is all made in the UK, including fabric printing, for production to be closely monitored at every step for highest quality and flexible approach to market demands. Simon says, On|Off is the best exhibition he has participated in to boost his profile and sales. For example, he has a new buyer in Italy with a very cool store, almost like a gallery of collector’s paradise. Simon Ekrelius has also received great exposure in UK and international press discovering his collection. Well done, Simon!
