The New York Fashion Week 2009 kicked off on a reportedly low key in light of the financial recession with the main Mercedes Benz Fashion Week event at Bryant Park having big name designers such as Vera Wang and Donna Karan re-thinking their usual grand-scale catwalks. We have also received reports that the guest list of the week’s biggest show, Marc Jacobs, has been cut down from 2,000 to 700 which makes us suggest that the guests better eat and drink before attending the after party, if invited at all!

There were not many Australian designers showcasing in the current economic climate, Myf Shepherd, Catherine McNeil and Stephanie Carta are the main Aussie models strutting around in the Big Apple. Carta has been nominated one of New York magazine’s Top 10 models to keep eyes on at the event.

Although times are tough, we are happy to hear that the industry is encouraging thin models to eat up! This season, the CFDA has launched a limited edition merchandise line designed by American fashion labels such as Michael Kors with all items incorporating “Health = Beauty”.
