Photos of Japanese Street Fashion and Style

Japan seems be undergoing a cultural re-appreciation and pride with for example stunning Japanese models promoting Shiseido’s new Tsubaki hair product line with the direct slogan “Japanese women are beautiful” instead of using Western celebrities as featured on Lux ads.

In the fashionable cities of Tokyo and Osaka you will still find Japanese girls with brown hair dye, fake extended eye lashes, eye widening surgeries, ugg boots, skyrocketing high heels and quasi English pasted everywhere to assimilate to the Western world. It is however still not surprising why in the past 15 years, Westerners have looked at Japan for original street style and fashion.

Our coin purses were shrinking, the global financial crisis arrived and we watched the exchange rate of the Aussie dollar free falling against the Japanese Yen. However, walking down the busy streets of Osaka and Tokyo, we couldn’t feel anything but high consumerism, style and shopping to the extremes.

The amazing diversity of street fashion and unique window displays, loud shop assistants and people on the street are calling out for your attention, creating a pulsating vibe on the streets and lots of eye candy. Everyone seems to have a need to be seen and the need to cut through the clutter is obvious with all the beauty products and fashion from the streets of Harajuku to high-end luxury brands.

We stumbled upon some gem areas a few blocks between Harajuku and Shibuya, away from the big streets with a myriad of shopping boutiques that probably hires the most edgy visual merchandisers in town as it was window shopping galore.

This and people watching are cheap ways of entertainment in general and we ended up with thousands of photos but we won’t bore you with a documentary so we have a picked out a few to be viewed in our style black book. Hope you enjoy!

    Hii mecho,
Love all the stories and pics you have put up from Japan! It seems to be such a buzzing and innovative country. Especially loved reading the article from Tokyo designers week and you have really inspired me to go want to go to there! xo

yeah love it! i’m completely obsessed by japan and thinking of going over there as soon as the economy gets back in shape…

i was very disappointed to find out that the quirky vending machines that used to stock everything are no longer around.the ones you can find in every corner now are only filled with soft drinks, water, coffee and cigarettes. (probably the “best” coffee you will find in japan however as starbucks is the only place that uses real barristas otherwise… hrm, need i say more??)

i know many viewed these classic vending machines as ugly urban pollution but i really think they were essence of modern japanese culture. same goes with their unique toilets, polite manners, modern technology, childish obsession of anime and karaoke. the beauty with japan is that they are embracing not only one common norm but a set of subcultures that allow you to express yourself through your own style and interest.

its very interesting read and observation you guys done of the cultural re-appreciation. japan should be proud of the beauty of their own people.

Hi Darren, I don’t completely agree with you on all point. that japan are embracing all subcultures. Having lived and worked in japan, i discover its a land full of contradiction and those that stand out from the norm have trouble getting acceptance. Having said that, I love Japan with all its quirkiness but there are still lots of underlying issues of old and new, east and west. its an interesting place. the new generation definately has a much more open mind though. Wow! Great photos! We’ve shelved our plans for next year’s Japan trip given the exchange rate. Sad because I miss it so much.

Gosh, everyone seem to have got hold of those cheap tix!??? 5 of my friends been there already this year and would probably say its the hot destination of the year. the party and underground scene seems to be pretty unreal by the looks of some of my friends pics and stories of nightclubs with different themes. japan seems crazy fun! take me take me with you next time!
