Q&A with Zoe Elizabeth Weir
We chat to Zoe Elizabeth Weir about her life as ‘Bikini Queen’…
Name:
Zoe Elizabeth Weir aka Ratty (zopo not very original)
Profession:
Bikini Designer for Zoe Elizabeth Bikini Queen
Passion:
The beach of course!
How I got my break:
I started the business up myself last year and it has been growing since then with some help from some wonderful PR.
Loves about the job:
The amazing fabrics I get to use and of course travelling and finding inspiration for future ranges.
Hates about the job:
I never stop thinking about the business, it’s my baby…
My 3 top tips for success:
Do what you love, lots of determination and no matter how many obstacles and dramas you encounter never loose sight of the big picture and don’t be afraid to ask for help!
Weekends are for:
Relaxing, sleeping in, big breakfasts, lots of late boozy lunches, catching up with friends and walking the dog.
Describe your style in a sentence:
Relaxed, I’m a jeans and a T-shirt kinda gal.
I get my inspirations from:
My Grandma’s beach style of the 50’s. I adore stripes, polka dots and liberty print fabrics they feel amazing against your skin and are always in fashion.
My current favourite mecho item:
Lacoste Spring Summer Collection 2008 - I adore the long white socks…. very chic!
Pssstt… One time I………
stole my sisters very special, very expensive dress and spilt orange juice down the front and ruined it, I tried everything to get a replacement as she is quite scary, however in the end I had to tell her and she settled on a gift voucher for the very large sum!

You can buy them online at www.zoeelizabeth.com.au or at numerous boutiques around Australia. Chamber Maid in High Street Armadale stocks the biggest range, hope that helps xo

Hi Kevin,
Tips for xmas, I think you definately have to go for a bright print as they always look flattering against either tanned or fair skinned gals. If she is a slim build most styles will suit, another thing that also works really well for gifts is if you get the bottoms embroidered with there initials… she will love you forever!

Good Morning Nikki!
It is a lot of fun making a living as a bikini designer, I have recently designed a range of resort wear to go back with the bikinis such as maxi dresses, shirt dresses, shorts and shirts which look great either worn casually with denim or the full look worn over the bikinis. Next year I am doing a range of gingham, polka dots and strips which is exciting…

Suggestions for people starting out is do a lot of research before you throw yourself in. Start small and slowly grow the business to make sure you don’t fall into debt, I did quite a bit of work experience in different areas of the fashion industry before I decided designing was what I wanted to do….

Hi Zoe,
Do you need to hit the books to become a bikini designer? Also, how do you find competing to big labels with huge marketing budgets but also celebrities coming up with their own brands?
Keep it up, girlfriend!!

Zoe | November 18th, 2008 at 12:02 pm
BEACH!!!! defiantly, if its not windy…

Zoe | November 18th, 2008 at 12:09 pm
Hi Mischa,
I don’t think you have to go to uni to be successful in the Fashion industry. I think you need a certain amount of flair and be self motivated…I think that applies in any business! Competing with big labels is tough you just have to find your niche and stick to it… I think that it is very important to spend money on PR and marketing as that is how people will remember the brand for years to come. All I can say is that I wish I was a celebrity as that would make life a lot easier!! xo

I personally think a heels look great with swimmers however its just not practical and I don’t think I could get away with it here! I wish it would catch on… other options include tan wrap around thongs, jelly babies, ballet flats or jeweled thongs x
