Q&A Yen Huynh | mecho & style igloo

Meet mecho’s Creator & Editor-in-Chief, Yen Huynh. Our October guest blogger grew up in Sweden and has lived in Australia the past years working in digital media. Followed by her passion for the digital space as well as design, new innovations and creative spaces, Yen started mecho to put the limelight on creative minds, both established as well as emerging brands in an inspirational and independent online style guide. She also recently started her own boutique style and brand consultancy style igloo in parallel where she collaborates with talents from different fields. Yen is currently in USA but will do her best to reply any comments!

Name: Yen Huynh

Nick name: Different people gives me different nicks… you know who you are! ;)

Profession:
Creator & Editor-in-Chief for independent online style guide mecho | the style black book
Director at boutique Sydney style and brand consultancy style igloo

Location:
Sydney, Australia

Passions:
Communication in all forms – design in all fields, sustainable innovations, travel, photography, culinary experiences, the World Wide Web, music, fresh air… and you!

Favourite mecho item:
As a self-confessed interior styling fanatic, Creative Spaces are especially close to my heart – I think it is important to surround yourself in inspiring environments whether it is your home, your office, a restaurant, a venue, a hotel or corner cafe…

I get my inspirations from:
People I meet, places I visit, extensive research, lots of work, brainstorms and things thrown my way – these go hand-in-hand with my passions above and anything worth a mention is almost always captured within mecho | the style black book

How I got my break:
Rather than one big break, I often find myself at different crossroads which lead to new interactions pending on which directions I take and decisions I make.

My top tricks of the trade:
Don’t be afraid of trying but afraid of not trying.

My style in a sentence:
Simplistic chic by day. A touch of lure by night. Fun and relaxed on weekends.

I bet you didn’t know I:
Am a pretty good dancer but never had the guts to record my dance moves like this dude…

BOOMBOX from Ely Kim on Vimeo.

My latest project is about:
Oh, I always have more than one happening! I love the Internet for allowing me to work in a more carbon neutral way, connecting and working with anyone from anywhere in the world, the world is my office! The very latest projects include visits to USA and Vanuatu. Last month, I also finally launched a website for my boutique consultancy style igloo. Big kudos to mecho contributor Julian James from Whyisbox in the UK for providing bespoke artwork to depict my services on the website. Julian’s illustrations are always fresh and is a really good guy to work with, not only creative but also dedicated to get things right and go the extra mile to make his client happy.

My last purchase:
A white Lomography Fisheye 2 camera, I can’t wait to develop the first film!

Travel destination and tips:
Endless of tips pending on what you want to get out of your trip! I’m being a bit patriotic as my heart has grown founder with distance to my home country of Sweden. It is a beautiful and peaceful place with high standard of living, distinct four seasons, silly traditions and great design innovations! Swedes also know how to party, here is an official invite in “Swenglish”:

Other fav spots in Europe include Italy and Spain but next time I go back, I’d also like to visit more of Eastern Europe such as Prague and Croatia for the architecture, culture and food. My top travel destinations in Asia are Vietnam, Singapore and Japan for many different reasons.

Currently, I’m doing a mecho USA travel special coverage with updates from West Hollywood, San Francisco and NYC. I will also tell you about a private island for rent in Vanuatu soon… stay tuned!

Psst… One time…
On my first night in West Hollywood, I was having dinner at the RH at Andaz and with the tables placed quite close to each other, I soon found myself chatting to the next table. The friendly guy turned out to be the camera man of the TV series Two and Half Men and after having some sarcastic comments about the somewhat sexist tv show, I’m suddenly invited to the studio..!

Max and Simone – thank you both for your kind words!

Max – time management, discipline, passion, forward thinking, versatility, creativity and people around me are a couple of important things driving me. I pretty much live and breathe what I do and loving it makes it easy to forget about time

I’ve always been used to a work hard and play hard culture in the industries I’ve worked in but am nowadays strongly finding the importance of work-life balance which propells me forward on both personal and professional levels.

    Love your style… x

    Oh beautiful Sam!

Your questions about Sweden may seem small but actually trigger a big answer as I have plenty of suggestions and probably can’t rank it in a Top 5 but will try to limit my recommendations which also pending on what season you are thinking of visit. Even though it is a small country, it is rich in culture, history and probably more diversity that one would think with its different regions in this long old country.

    ROADTRIP
If you have time, best ways to experience Sweden is through a road trip in Summer (June-August). Roads are safe and beautiful in Summer, you will go through different picturesque sceneries along your route, a myriad of towns, hear different dialects, see different architecture, taste regional culinary signature dishes and discover a lot of traditions. Even though Swedish people are probably one of the most liberal nationalities around the word, we do stick to many old things just for fun and respect.

You can even cross the bridge to Denmark in the south that links to rest of Europe or cross the border to Norway in the northwest or catch a ferry over to East Europe. Sweden is a monarchy and there are also lots of castles from different eras and remains from the Viking era scattered around everywhere worth seeing. I grew up in Southern Sweden in Smaland (here is also where IKEA originated) and handycraft such as glassmaking is also very famous such as Orrefors and Kosta Boda – visit a glassmaker and try to make some own. There are also lots of beautiful lakes to dip yourself in and some islands on the east coast to visit as well – Oland and Gotland are very unique.

Knowing you are very into rejuvenation and relaxation, Sweden is definately a country to relax in and you may discover a lot of natural products and beauty treatments too!

    STOCKHOLM
Stockholm is the beautiful capital of Sweden built on archipelagos with room for lots of sightseeing, shopping, cafes and bars – mecho contributor Andrew Green has also lived there and might have some more specific tips!

    MIDSUMMER
If you are going in June – you need to experience a Midsummer which welcomes the sun with all the crazy fun traditions and celebrations that comes with it. I used to spend it on the west coast in someone’s cottage, summer house or camping.

    XMAS
I do not miss the cold that holds Sweden in a grip for at least 6 months of the year although the four seasons are very beautiful and distinct which I miss. Living in Australia, I do miss having a white Xmas in Sweden with lots of candles, ginger bread smell, traditional Swedish food, mulled wine and sauna parties.

    DESIGNERS
There are lot of great designers and fashion coming out from Sweden to keep an eye out for and some we try to capture in mecho but there are constantly new things coming out.

    FRESH AIR
Breathe in as much as you can over there!

If I happen to be in Sweden, I would love to show you around and introduce you to some locals!

Also, here is the offical website to Visit Sweden: http://www.visitsweden.com/

Let me know if anything specific you want to know more about should you decide to visit Sverige.

    Hey Yen,

are you going to check out Portland, Oregon? I hear that its a city that is on the up – the description exactly was ‘All the good stuff from San Fran and none of the bad’.

Also, how do you source your info for new releases and interesting concepts without recycling whats already been put on other websites?

    Har det så bra!

  • 13. Chris  |  October 8th, 2009 at 8:07 am

    Hey Yen,

Love your fearlessness & dedication to your 2x projects.
How you keep on top of everything is amazing?!

I trust you’re having a wonderful day in the US today.
Look forward to catching up with you when you return safely.

    Cheers

  • 14. Yen  |  October 8th, 2009 at 9:57 am

    Hi Andrew,

Yeah, I’ve heard Portland is a good place to visit with lots of things happening in both fashion and music but unfortunately don’t have time to go there… Have already squeezed in LA, San Fran and I’m now in NYC! Maybe next time…

Research, hard work and endless of sources from around the world plus a 6th sense are really all to this. mecho aims to stay fresh but it is invitable that things might be or will be featured elsewhere as everyone wants to get as much publicity they can. Most important is that we only feature things we think deserve a spot in the style black book. The Contributors Network which you are part of and the public in general also provide inspiration/suggestions which are all incredibly refreshing :)

    Tack detsamma! Kram x

  • 15. Yen  |  October 8th, 2009 at 10:00 am

Thanks Chris, as mentioned to Max there are a combination of driving forces! I’m looking forward to dive right into it all on my return to Sydney.

NY was very windy today but nevertheless having a wonderlful time! I am shocked however with the latest news of an earthquake in Vanuatu as I recently visited a beautiful island there and did sleep through a tremble when visiting a few weeks ago…

Looking forward to catch up with everyone in Sydney.

    Yen x
