Q&A Robyn Wilson | Flutter Lyon
Robyn Wilson is an Audio Visual Artist and Performer, fluttering between Sydney and New York City. Share her views of courage. Courage = Creativity.
Name: Robyn Wilson Nick name: Flutter flutter flutter
Profession: Audio Visual Artist & Performer, Flutter Lyon

Location: Fluttering between Sydney, Australia and Brooklyn, NYC, USA
Passion: Luscious fleeting moments of audio visual splendour
I get my inspirations from:
At this moment particularly, as in today – naked ballet dancers, ebony piano keys, shattered glass, powder, dark beauty, acts of courage.
How I got my break:
Is there a moment of breaking? I wonder. I have been given many amazing opportunities, recently playing in New York City was certainly an incredible experience. I also completed two photographic projects whilst I was there featuring jumpsuits designed by my creative entity, View of Courage Studios.

Forever the Motion was a sell-out audio visual show I performed in and produced with a group of fellow artists and musicians at Black & Blue Gallery in Sydney earlier this year and I have illustrated a large scale wall project for recording studio Studios 301 with Ben Frost and Kyle Jenkins in the past month.

I was commissioned to create an LED video installation at Australian Fashion Week last year, as well as curating a few video and performance across Sydney. Everything is in movement constantly. One can not stand still when there is so much that one can be doing with their being.

My top tricks of the trade: To always act with integrity, sensitivity and courage.
My style in a sentence:
I get what I give, I feel to the deepest degree and I am honest in what I say and do.

I bet you didn’t know I can:
Choose really good wine to drink. My best friend is a sommelier, I have been taught well… really, you can test me.
My latest project is about:
In Light & Splendor, a private and private audio visual tour of Sydney this coming Summer with interactive artist Lukasz Karluk and the strikingly distinguished Kirin J Callinan. There will be more to know soon. I have recently been picked-up by a manager from New York who I am working with on the tour and on a second tour in the US in 2010. Lukasz and I are playing at the opening of Anode Festival at Paddington Town Hall on 21 November. I have also curated From the Outside Looking Inside Out | Video from the Borough, a collection of video works produced by Brooklyn NYC based video artists that will feature throughout the program at Anode Festival in Sydney and Melbourne.
My last purchase:
A beautiful white 1960’s Supro electric guitar, from Main Drag Music in Williamsburg Brooklyn, one of the best second hand music stores there.

My current favourite mecho item:
Probably Ratua Private Island, Vanuatu. Oh, one’s own private island! Imagine the splendour of having only the greatest people around you to play with and exist in such moments of seclusion.

Travel destination and tips:
I am currently drawn so strongly to New York City. The energy, the people, the creative scene there is fast and unforgiving. Everything counts. There is a reason to push and fulfil everything you can at any moment in time. I think I may have an obsession with the place.
Pssstt… One time I…
I was given instructions to meet a girl outside Katz Deli in Manhattan and to give her the password ‘Happy Feet’. Password successful. We were then lead around the corner and into these giant locked doors… once inside of the partially renovated building we found ourselves within this incredible party, DJs on every floor and an open roof filled with people madly mingling, dancing, cavorting in the centre of the city on a glowing hot Summer’s night. We played and enjoyed until the sun rose, what a night…

You seem to have lots going on! How do you get gigs and is it hard to survive within your profession? Seems very niche but amazing that you can live out of your passion

Hi Tiani! You know it was a real pleasure working with Ben Frost. I was prepared for all of the possibilities that his punk-ass reputation might bring with it..but alas, he is a pussy cat..a delight really
And everyone else, I’d like to introduce Tiani Chillemi, Director of Anode Festival happening right now in Melbourne and next Sydney ffom 21 November. You can check out the rich and diverse program of events and exhibitions here > http://www.anode2009.com

Hey Alex! Thanks for your comment.
It is a juggle to live off your creativity but it’s like anything I guess, if you really want it, there’s always a way. I don’t think it is necessarily ‘hard’, not if you compare the reality of being an artist vs working in an office with no soul or rigid energy..that’s hard! And yes I’ve done that before..
Gigs and projects come via several avenues, but I find the best come via word of mouth and connections with other creatives, as a personal connection to a project is usually more fluid and subconscious in its outcome.

You must have so much energy! I would find it so exhausting to constantly find outlets for my passions… I’m lazy! I’ve also heard about those secret parties in NY and wonder how you get into those things????? Sounds incredible!!!

Oh hey guys x
Thanks for the questions.
Hi Kelly, Flutter Lyon has been my performance guise for only 6 months really, I liked the idea of stepping into a character that created a separation from my other art direction and fashion work.
And Tim, I do a few different things..you might get a better idea here … http://www.viewofcourage.com
Cheers!
