Q&A Dean & Gavin | Fashion Designers
Fashion designers Dean and Gavin from Khrysalis first came to our attention as “the ones to watch during” recent Rosemount Australian Fashion Week 2010 New Generation show. Don’t just watch, interact and learn more about these guys this month.
Names: Dean Rankin & Gavin Bradstreet Nick name: Gavin=Turtle
Profession:
Designers of our label Khrysalis. We are also full-time parents of our gorgeous Great Dane, Vali.

Location: Northern Beaches in Sydney, Australia
Passion:
Each other! Above mentioned Great Dane, family, friends, fashion, art, design, creating, drawing, architecture, nature. People, life, moments, memories, history, scents, textures , books and films. People who march to the beat of their own drum. Individuals, activists, taking risks and living each moment to the fullest. Expressing oneself however one is able
We get our inspirations from: From all of the above and soo much more…
How we got our break:
By Dean winning the Textile Institute Design Award in 2009 and then the Delegates Choice award at the International Textile conference in Dunedin later in 2009. Our first winter collection then came to the attention of one of the editors at Marie Claire, who turned out to be our first ever sale.
Our top tricks of the trade:
Keep your cards close to your chest and stay true to your vision. Oh yes and most importantly, be prepared to work your ass off!
Our style in a sentence: Eclectic and unique with a dark edge.

Bet you didn’t know we can:
Dean: Perform an autopsy, walk better in heels than any women, cook, juggle, fire twirl, sing and dance, the list is endless! Haha!
Gavin: Sculpt, photograph, draw and paint. Give any olympic skier a run for their money in the moguls.
Our latest project is about: To unfold, but it’s still a secret. Shhhh.
Our last purchase:
Dinner last night, Thai I believe. Delicious. Apart from that, the 90 meters of tulle required to make one of the skirts for our New Generation show at RAFW 2010.
Our current favorite mecho item:
The circular bookcase Archive II by David Garcia is absolutely fab! We could mount it to the wall and it could become a giant bed or running wheel for said Great Dane in our studio! Hehe…

Travel destination and tips:
Next up we are dying to go Kerala in India and cruise around the thousands of kilometers of back waters in an old converted rice barge. The light, the colours, textures and textiles, mesmerising. Our only tip would be not to drink the water.

Pssst… One time… Dean was mobbed by 40 girls because they thought he was Boy George.

Hi guys, do you only design for women or is there a mens range too? Always nice to see new Australian labels coming up!

Khrysaliskids | June 1st, 2010 at 2:29 pm
Hey Chad,
!! hehe.
How are you doing?
Thanks for that, yeah we have to support our Aussie labels or they will unfortunately disappear under a sea of imports!!
We would so love to do a menswear range at some point in the future, it would be great to finally make some pieces that we can actually wear!! Ha! I have been sewing for years and I am yet to find the time to make anything for myself, even when studying fashion we did not do any menswear!!! An outrage, all the girls graduated with whole wardrobes full of clothes for themselves the lucky ducks and I left empty handed
Once we have grown our label over the next couple of years, got some more money behind us and the staff to match, you can be guaranteed to see some Khrysalis menswear rocking the Casbah, so keep your eyes and ears peeled!!
xx ciao for now

Hey babes, fancy seeing you here!! How are you my love? Thank you so much for your sweet words and encouragement. Love you and missing you big time!!
Isn’t Mecho great! I wish it was ours but it’s not!! Ha! You can check out our website at http://www.khrysaliscouture.com, go on, be a devil, you’re only young once right!! LOL
Interesting choice of words, passion and commitment, so spot on! Since we started the label we have required an awful lot of both, it has been quite the journey I must say. Working so much of course unfortunately doesn’t leave an awful lot of time for a life per se but hopefully, fingers crossed, it will all be worth it in the end or I’ll die trying dagnamit!!! Hehe.
Would love to catch up soon sweets! Fb me.
May this find you radiant as always, big big love to you xxd

Hi Bec,

Thanks
how are you?
Thanks for taking the time to check us out and ask a question, appreciate it.
In two words, grit and determination!!!
Many people, particularly the more cynical amongst us, would simply say that all you need is a lot of money to succeed and to a certain extent this is very true, you do require a good whack of it, and yes there are labels out there (and far more than you realise) that do simply make it by spending a fortune on PR and advertising and if you happen to be in this position then you are sweet. Many labels also make it through the people they know and the connections they have, these labels are lucky indeed!! For us lesser mortals however who are not as fortunate or as well supported it really comes down to believing in yourself and your abilities and having the absolute passion and commitment to see it through. You will be required to put in the most unbelievable hours. In the last 1.5yrs we have had only 6 days off. (one for a funeral!) We work on average 16hr days, 7 days a week!! It is full on, but if your committed and following your dream at least you are working for yourself and your future so it’s all totally worth it!! Just remember to have some fun along the way!!!
Network and research, both in person and online, really important!! Know who and what is out there both in terms of trends, textiles and technologies, know and learn absolutely everything you can that is even remotely related to the industry about manufacturers, machinists, suppliers, logistics, legal, intellectual property etc! There is much to consider. Talk to as many people as you can, but be warned many of these things such as suppliers and machinists are well kept secrets and information not readily given out! Volunteer, do work experience, an incredibly valuable learning experience.
Do a business plan and a small business course, these are mandatory. If possible, get yourself a good accountant, it helps if you have one in the family! hehe. If you haven’t studied Fashion or some other kind of design course I would also advise you to do so. It helps in so many ways and is a great time to have fun and be creative.
Goodness, BLAH BLAH BLAH!!! I do go on don’t I!!! Sorry about that!!LOL. I’ll be off now, but good luck with it! If it’s what you really want and you work your ass off, chances are you will succeed!!
xxd

hi again and big thanks for taking time to reply!!
usually one gets only vague and cliche type of answers – i really appreciate you taking the time as your tips are very helpful and motiviating. i know there are no short cuts but you often hear about rich kids starting out their own labels so it is good to see how mortal people do it. encouraging to see that your hard work is starting to pay off now. you guys rock!

ahahha.. have you seen how boy george looks like these days? i hope the similarities stopped from his early days! one of you actually looks a bit like jean paul gaultier!
15.
Khrysaliskids | June 4th, 2010 at 9:03 pm
Hahaha!!! Yes, luckily I seem to have fared a little better than poor George! Although funnily enough I can sound like him if I want to when I sing, although I’m not entirely sure that is a good thing these days!!LOL
Yes, Turtle does look a little Gaultierish in that one photo! Hilarious, I just may have to send Turtle over to France to do Gaultierl in and then we can take over his empire and rule the world!! hehehe!
Cheers Mozz, and have a good weekend!

Andy | June 7th, 2010 at 11:22 am
Hi guys, which labels do you like wearing yourselves?
17.
khrysaliskids | June 7th, 2010 at 1:32 pm
Hey Andy, how you doin? Thanks for the question
We tend not to be label queens, the garment itself should be chosen because you love it and it helps you express yourself in a particular moment regardless of where it is from. All our money is now consumed by the label so we haven’t been shopping for a while unfortunately!!
We do love internationally Nom’d, McQueen Menswear, Rick Owens and many many more. Locally we tend to rock Saint Augustine’s Academy for their groovy suits, Artsu for their individual prints and jeans, Kornerd for their lambs wool hoodies.(all of whom are friends and delightful people that make cool clothes!)
We absolutely covet whatever little treasures we can find from that shop that stocks only Japanese designers somewhere in daringhurst…The name escapes me at the moment, we will post it later, sorry!
Last but certainly not least you can’t beat markets (Surry Hills in Sydney) and op shops!!
Take care,
xxd&g

Kate | June 16th, 2010 at 2:27 pm
Hi Gavin & Dean, can’t wait to see your winter collection for 2011 but any tips of how to look cool and not cold!!! for us in Sydney NOW?? =)
24.
Khrysaliskids | June 17th, 2010 at 9:36 am
Hey Kate,
and I tend not to pay a huge amount of attention to what really out there because I don’t want to get too heavily influenced!
How are you going?
Thanks for the question, appreciate it!
I think someone, no matter what they are wearing looks cool when the are confident within themselves and expressing some individual style.
Of course anything from our winter collection, which you can see on our website http://www.khrysaliscouture.com is super hot!! Haha!
This is kinda a tricky question to answer because I don’t really believe in following trends. I believe that it is best to express you you are and to wear things that you love and that suit you and your body shape.
Many people make the mistake of believing the must follow the trends only to find themselves in clothes that are not particularly flattering or they don’t like.
Make the most of hot accessories and get yourself a pair of killer boots. Get yourself, budget permitting, a gorgeous leather jacket.
I do believe in beautiful natural fibres, wool and leather and layering. Knit is going to be huge!!
Draping and leather are very big this season as is anything studded. We are still seeing some shoulder action.
Whatever trends you choose to partake in just make sure you ‘own’ it. Give it your own little twist to make you stand out in the crowd.
Good luck Kate, I hope this is of some help, just a little difficult when I don’t know exactly what you’re into or your body type
Have an awesome day lovie!!

Andy,
I know this is an incredibly late reply and I do apologise!!
I finally remembered the name of the amazing boutique that stocks all the incredibly hot Japanese designers in Darlinghurst, (better late than never I guess!!!) It is called 2nd Coming, and I think it is to die for so go and check it out people and do yourselves a favour!!
Rock on

Hey Andy!!
I know 2nd coming have a website with an online shop so that you can go for your life if anything tickles your fancy, hehe.
)
Glad we could help you in some way. It’s always exciting to come across new and interesting labels, so happy hunting
As far as opening our own stores that is a little way off for us at this stage unfortunately but is definately on the cards at some stage in the future. We are aiming to get our own online shop happening within the next six months so that will be something to look out for!
We have just picked up our first stockist in Melbourne, Dez”s Dispensary in South Yarra, which is way cool and you can expect to see some pieces from our SS 2011 range in store in a few sort months. Woooohooo!! We are totally stoked as everybody knows Melbourne is where it’s at when it comes to fashion!! Haha (no offence Sydney or the rest of Australia
Anyhoo, take care Andy and thanks so much for your interest and interaction!
Ciao for now xxd
