Q&A Philip Boon | Stylist
Meet Philip Boon with his extensive experience from fashion design and manufacturing to costume design, fashion show coordination, publicity and perhaps best known as a celebrity stylist with A-List actors, actresses and supermodels – both for editorial and red carpet events. His famous and diverse clientele has included Sneaky Sound System to Magda Szubanski and even the controversial Marion Jones to mention a few.
Name: Philip Boon Nick Name: I hate being called ‘Phil’
Profession: Stylist
Location: Melbourne & Sydney (Australia) or anywhere a client wishes to fly me!
Passion: Fashion and creativity wherever it may appear
I get my inspiration from: Life, history, friends, books, culture, subculture and maybe the disco.
How I got my break: I slept my way to the top!
My top tricks of the trade: Now if I told you that everyone would know my secret!
My style in a sentence:
I believe a stylist has to be somewhat of a chameleon and change and evolve with the work they are creating, so I would say I’m changeable and hopefully always current.
Bet you didn’t know:
Well, everyone by now knows that I love to use vintage pieces, (clothing and furniture) in my work but I also love vintage cars and simply adore my gold vintage Mercedes, probably the only ‘testosterone like’ thing about me!

My latest project is about:
I have recently started lecturing at a design school one day a week and I’m actually organising a shoot this week in the classroom for an upcoming editorial for my students to watch (and hopefully learn) what goes on during a high fashion photo shoot.
My last purchase: Was a vintage military jacket with fantastic epaulets
My current favourite mecho item: I love it all!
Travel Destination & Tips:
I’ve been to New York many times but haven’t been for a few years so I plan on a trip very soon. I try to stay with friends usually but have many times rented an apartment in the Lower East Side which I love. My tip would be to try and rent an apartment in NYC rather than get a hotel as it really lets you enjoy the city as a local.

Pssst… one time I:
I wore a full-length Russian fox fur to an event and I ended up on a blog saying “We can’t understand why PETA hasn’t targeted him yet”!

Hi Lee, no I haven’t styled any movies, I’ve done plenty of music film clips and television commercials but I prefer doing stills shoots at the moment.
Hey Alexia, no I’m not in Sydney this RAFW unfortunately but have been most years since the start 15 years ago, I was hoping to see my friend Aurelio Costarella’s show last night which would have been a must see, you can check out some of his magic on my blog http://www.stylistsays.blogspot.com Thanks for the questions guys, keep them coming!

Hi Philip,
You seem to be living the high life! Any career low-lights you care to share for me to feel better about my mundane day job?

Hey Nic, well I think the first celeb I styled was Megan Gale, maybe not the first but one of them. I love Cate Blanchet and would love to work with her but she has a great stylist and fantastic personal style as well!
Hey Billie, well I dont know about the High life but it has its moments! It also has its many low lights, like working with difficult clients, darting around town getting parking tickets, sore arms from carrying bags and bags of clothing/shoes and working to some very fine deadlines. But I’m far from complaining and I do love what I do or I wouldn’t have been doing it for the last 12 years!!!

I haven’t heard about James Bond’s Aston Martin being for sale but I must say I’m very happy with my Vintage Benz, which I bought off a Mercedes Car Club enthusiast. I don’t really need an extension…
