Q&A Jonson & Justin Seelenmeyer | Plasid Apparel
Meet the brothers Justin and Jonson Seelenmeyer – the creative minds behind the Aussie street fashion label Plasid Apparel. Combining high-end outerwear and classic sophistication with day-to-day basics and streetwear with an urban aesthetic and mix of colours.
Names: Jonson Seelenmeyer & Justin Hugh Seelenmeyer
Profession: Plasid Apparel Directors
Location: Manly, Sydney, Australia

Passion:
Style, surfing, coffee on a Sunday morning (and most other days), the beach, red wine, Sundays in Manly, old scotch and new threads.
We get our inspirations from:
All sorts of different things. The main influence would be day-to-day activities, such as a trip into the city and surrounding suburbs, where we will observe individuality, contrasting styles and people’s ways of life. Sourcing and discovering new materials and product to work with kindles new ideas and concepts for designs too. As well, there’s content on the net and in magazines that catch your eye and have some influence on what we will be putting on the shelves.

How we got our break: Being creative, enthusiastic, and having determination in what we are doing.
Our top tricks of the trade:
Is to emulate the best, but copy none – you need to be unique and create your own sense of individuality which is recognisable as its own brand.
Our style in a sentence: Classic fitted and sophisticated cuts with an urban/street edge and aesthetic.
Bet you didn’t know: Our creative streak doesn’t stop when we enter the kitchen.
Our latest project is about:
Our new range is a mixture of Sydney night and street life, and cruisy leisure days in Summer. Below are some photos from our recent Summer Launch Party at White Revolver in Bondi.
Our last purchase: A Coffee Machine for our Showroom – it keeps us working hard.
Our current favourite mecho item:
The new 2010 Campari Calendar featuring the delightful Olga Kurylenko

Travel destination and tips:
Our favourite place for holidaying these days is, funnily enough, where we spent the entirety of our child-hood, on the mid-north coast of NSW. It is so relaxed and stress-free up there, and so is the perfect place to escape the rat-race and hype of the city. Top tips for visiting these parts would to bring fisherman pants, Tally-Ho’s and a good attitude.
Pssst… One time we…
No particular story or moment came to mind however Summer in Manly, especially on Sundays, always bring a lot of fun times and plenty of laughs. There is always a wide variety of entertainment in so many ways…

Hi Girls,
Happy New Year, and thanks for your interest.
Firstly, to Lara; getting a label together was something that wanted to be done for a while, and rather than procrastinating any further, we got some initial sample’s together for our first range and things just flowed from there.
If you are interested in doing something similar, we suggest to just wing it! (with a strategic plan). After all, why wait?
Glad to hear your digging our threads, too.
Secondly, Gwen; in both photo’s, Justin is on the left and Jonson is on the right.
As for the name, we went for ‘plasid’ and not ‘placid’, because ‘placid’ is immediately suggestive that our goods are ‘placid’ – as it is defined – and in that sense it gives wrong insight of what we are about as a label. We, in contrast, see our goods as being almost the opposite of ‘placid’.
More importantly however, ‘placid’ was already registered and trademarked, and in order to save another trip to the city, we both got creative on the spot, thunk on it for a while, and came up with ‘plasid’. In the end as well, we better liked the look of the ‘S’ rather than the ‘C’.
Thanks again for your interest, and feel free to shoot through any more queries.
Cheers,
Justin & Jonson

Dudes, you are inspiration! Just a tad scary about getting investment and all connections but everyone says that one thing usually leads to another! Good on you both for making it this far

You needn’t be worried about investment debt, Lara. As long as you plan your work to a tee, and it is faultless enough that you are confident you’ll be making it back, debt is good.
You are still allowed to party, too. So worry not about that either.
Yeah the Brotherly love makes things interesting, Rocco – especially on the golf course. In the office however, like any business, you’ve got to keep things harmonious to make it work, and although, we’ll admit, there is the occasional bickering/ almost throw down, we do make note to keep things as professional as possible.
And yes, chemically, I don’t think water is as thick as blood.
Keep the comments rolling through kids….
Ciao

Sorry, Rocco, I forgot about the shoe’s. But yes, they are ours.
The black & brown rounded points are available to buy now and will be up on our online store at http://www.plasidapparel.com by weeks end.
Cheers, and enjoy the rest of your week.

Hey Josh.
The lifestyle on The Beaches is a lot like home (Mid-North Coast home) – relaxed and stress free – which we like. For that reason it is not essentially harder working in Manly instead of the City, but rather we find it easier.
It is, however, more time consuming when traveling city bound compared to somewhere like Bondi, and in that sense it is slightly harder, for it is less convenient than what it would be if we where based more central, or over East.
Olga sure brightens the pages of Campari’s 2010 calender, agreed.
Enjoy the weekend ahead Dude!

do you ever find it hard to focus living so close to the beach and working with hot models? hehe

plasidapparel | January 13th, 2010 at 12:34 pm
Hi Josh.
Good question, but no, it is more like the other way around; the models seem to increase our focus levels, as does the beach.
After spending our earlier years frolicking around in the ocean we couldn’t imagine living away from the coast.
Anyway, we hope you all enjoyed your weekend, and be sure to keep up the quizzing’…
Ciao.

Annie | January 14th, 2010 at 11:05 am
Any regrets in life? Any new years resolutions? Annie likes to ask about anything
14.
plasidapparel | January 14th, 2010 at 7:45 pm
Yes, that is evident.
For the past questions we have usually just answered them as one person, as you can see. We are going to veer away from this however, and write as the two separate people that we are, in order to penetrate the depth of Annie’s intrigue.
Firstly, Justin:
Regrets – As cliche’ as it sounds, I try not dwell on the things of the past too much, and thus not have any regrets in life. This is obviously easier said than done, and I’ll admit, even in ‘09, that there where specific things I would have done differently, or would like to change if I had the opportunity to do so. Which leads me to my:
New Years Resolution – I’ll be trying to look at circumstances of the past which I see as being undesirable as a learning curve, rather than dwelling on them and using them as alibi’s. On top of this, I hope to increase my focus, party less & lower my handicap.
Now Jonson:
Regrets – Competing against Justin in Golf.
New Years Resolution – Improve my golf game and latte’ making skills.
Anything else, Annie?
And thanks for the Kudo’s Misha…

To be honest, I answered Jonson’s questions for him. But he will be on later to reconstruct his statements…..

plasidapparel | January 17th, 2010 at 7:58 pm
Ahh, but you are somewhat correct with the ‘regrets’. I’m not always keen on a leisurely round of Golf with Justin, as he often loses, and tends to dwell on these losses. However I have noticed his game improving slightly just now in 2010, I think the New Years Resolution is doing justice…

Love asking anything as I may expect anything as an answer!!! Thanks for sharing guys. One more thing as I am considering the big leap… where in the world would you move if you could? Anywhere!?

Jess | January 23rd, 2010 at 4:06 pm
Spill what you think is biggest turn off in women…?! ;-D
19.
plasidapparel | January 25th, 2010 at 9:42 pm
Jonson has clearly been binge drinking again. And its not even Australia day, yet!
Considering the big leap, Annie. Nice, I like the initiative (or, at least, thought of initiative). At the moment, personally, we are both happy in Sydney; the beach, cafe’s, bars, people, abundance of opportunity. Its a great place.
Sorry we couldn’t help more, but essentially, it is up to you as to were you want your “big leap” to begin. Just take advantage of the fact that you have all the freedom that anybody could wish for, and just got with it. It always figures itself out anyway, so no need to worry.
As for Jess’ trivia, the biggest turn-off in women, for us, is excessive underarm hair, bad breath, and, more importantly, a negative personality. Don’t you just hate it when negative people bring you down?
Enjoy your Australia day holiday everyone, and if you see Jonson rampaging around the beaches, don’t try and stop him, he will not listen. And its highly possible he’ll try and get your number, too.
