How I got my break: I’m still trying to get it! Confidence and visualisation definitely takes you places.

My top photo trick: For drool-worthy food shots inside a restaurant, turn flash off, use macro and lean your elbows on the table for a steady tripod effect!

jenius modern australian food

My style in a sentence: Girly mixed with random bursts of colour and life.

Travel destination and tips: I travelled to the lands of good and cheap food (Singapore & Vietnam) last year and am working on self-publishing a photographic memoir of everything I ate there. My biggest tip, apart from the obvious need for research, would be to bring a tiny notepad so you can easily recall what each photo was and where it was taken. It is tremendously helpful when you process the photos many weeks later.

Carrying a compact camera as well as a DLSR is handy as well. I’m doing an all-round Europe trip in May. Tips on where to dine and shop are most welcome!

I bet you didn’t know I can: Play golf… I’m not great but it’s the only sport I can play.

I get my inspirations from: Blogs, books and travel.

My latest project is about: Making money by coupling things I am passionate about.

My last purchase: Black patent leather peep-toe heels

My current favourite mecho item: The 2009 Canon IXUS range! I’m a loyal Canon user and my old school IXUS 500 is finally showing signs of old age!

Pssstt…..One time……… Two years ago, my boyfriend took me to Tetsuya’s for my birthday. We rocked up in his doof-doof Honda Civic which had a rattling muffler. The valet attendant took the keys without hesitation and drove off. At the end of our meal, the frazzled valet attendant exclaimed that our car was broken. A rare moment to him, we were led to the garage where my boyfriend naturally reconnected the leads into the battery and drove off. I guess it wasn’t every day that he faced bombs like ours.

Hi Jen, wow…i can’t stop drooling over your great pics! how many nice restaurants you go to in a week and how can you afford it?!

    keep up the good work!

    Hi Jen,

What a fun hobby to have! I feel very akward when my partner takes out a camera when we are out wining and dining but I guess your boyfriend must be used to that now ;)

For how long have you been blogging and do you ever get dirty looks? Do the restaurants know that they are being reviewed? I’m getting so hungry viewing your photos and it is not even lunch time yet…

wicked! is there anything u would never eat? also do u photoshop any of ur pics?? u seem to have a great camera lens!

  • 4. Jen  |  March 2nd, 2009 at 5:01 pm

Hey Jodee, I don’t go to as many as I’d like to! I think on average I eat out at least 3 times a week and maybe fine dining once a fortnight?

Hi Stacey! Oh, yes, my boyfriend probably feels the same way now but nothing will stop me! haha… my blog is in its 3rd year, and I have been taking photos of food well before that. I try to hide my identity when dining and am pretty discrete with photographing the food. E.g. camera is hidden on lap, so let’s hope most restaurants don’t know. When I do have the DLSR out though, i guess that gives it away.

Hi Matt, how un-Australian of me, but I don’t eat lamb. I think that’s the only thing I don’t enjoy. I occassionally edit the colour curve in Photoshop but otherwise most photos are untouched. Good lighting is the key; window seats are fantastic and dim candle-lit tables are not.

Your photos are delicious, Jen. Hope you have enough time to enjoy Europe and budgeted for dining out as it can be quite expensive over there.

In London, visit a traditional English pub for a hearty pie or fish n chips to wash down with beer but also check out the Indian cuisine in Brick Lane. In Paris, climb up Montmatre for a view over the city and walk around in the small cafes and surrounding streets for shops and people watch! For big brands, shop at La Fayette or Le Bon Marche which has both shopping and food halls plus a roof garden. Sadly Champs-Elysees is not that chic anymore. Theres lots of flea markets if you like pre-loved stuff. Beware of pickpockets anywhere in Paris!

What other cities are you going to?

Hi Jen, when I went on a 3 week holiday to Croatia, France and London a couple of years ago, the highlight was the Borough Markets in London (although Croatia came a very close second!) I’m gutted that I never visited these markets when I actually lived in London http://www.boroughmarket.org.uk/

Thanks Michelle, I’m trying to get all my restaurants sorted and some booked now. Yes, budgeting will be tough! I’ve been advised to eat big lunches to to save money on dinner, haha!

I’ll also be going to Nice/Monaco, Barcelona, Athens, Mykonos, Santorini, Rome, Florence, Venice and either Dubrovnik, Munich, Berlin or Prague.

Thanks for the tips, food hall and roof garden sounds lovely!

    Heya Jen,

If you’re ever in London, make sure you check out this restaurant in Chinatown called Haozhan! London’s well known for bad asian food at extortionate prices but this one’s a real gem… they serve asian fusion dishes and prices are quite reasonable too – think wasabi prawns and curry flavoured soft-shell crab… mmmmmm…

Your churros photo has got my mouth watering… keep snapping!

  • 16. Jen  |  March 11th, 2009 at 12:04 pm

cookiemonster & Matt, i’ve had a really good creme brulee w/ jaffa chocolate mousse and raspberries at Strangers With Candy, a stunning wattle seed variation at Rocket, a good classic one at Nick’s Seafood and quite a refreshing green tea version at Kobe Jones.

Rise do seasonal (and experimental) pannacotta -i haven’t come across one which i didn’t like, but i think my favourite will have to be the famous jiggly one at Jonah’s.

Tiramisu, try Pasticceria Papa, you’ll pick up lots of other goodies here too. Sticky Bar is meant to do a good tiramisu as well, but I haven’t been.

James Squire beer, yellow fin tuna with crackling pork and waygu beef burger did the job for me. There was a Brazilian bar I forgot to try. Can anyone remember the name of it and was it any good?
